We had the good fortune of connecting with Benny Hubbard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Benny, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted something that represented my home state of Mississippi. Growing up I didn’t have many options to choose from that I thought represented Mississippi well. With my brand, I came up with a symbol that would show the beauty of Mississippi, by infusing the M, along with our state flower. I wanted a symbol that everyone in Mississippi could wear. Now my girlfriend and I are making new designs to make Mississippi more trendy and cool. We currently have our famous magnolia dad hats, and t-shirts, but be on the lookout for our new products coming soon.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is really still pretty new. I officially started selling my products in February 2021. It has definitely been a rollercoaster of a journey, but I can say I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.
What sets me aside from others is the uniqueness of fusing the state of Mississippi with streetwear. I want people to wear the state they love, with a symbol they can be proud to wear in their day to day life. What I’m most proud of is just starting the business. So many people will talk themselves out of starting by only focusing on what can go wrong. You can’t be afraid to jump. Whether you are struggling or not, just be happy you started in the first place – many people don’t even get that far.
Outside of receiving a Business Administration degree from The University of Southern Mississippi, I would say I inherited my business savvy mindset from my dad, who owns his own insurance company. I witnessed firsthand at what a dream looks like once its turned into reality. This inspired and taught me a few things about how to run a business.
I want the world to know that my brand can bring a fresh new look on a state with many stories to tell. I want my hats to be as big as the LA Dodgers hats one day.
I’m just a guy from a small town in Mississippi, who wants to add to the legacy, through my products.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I currently live in New Orleans, so let’s have a night out in NOLA.
We would begin at Cafe Du Monde, for the world famous beignets. Next, we would grab a bite to eat at one of my favorite spots in the city, Neyow’s. They have the best chargrilled oysters in the city. They also offer a drink called the Bow Wow Punch, which can be alcoholic or non alcoholic.
Afterwards, we would go to Jackson Square to look at art work, listen to live music, or a performance act that may be happening. We would keep walking over to the French Market, to enjoy more of the New Orleans culture. As the sun starts to set, we would head over to Frenchman Street, to eat at Dat Dog and enjoy some live music.
To end the night, we would experience the world famous Bourbon Street, where we would bar hop, and people watch all night. There is always something to see.
The next day we would enjoy my favorite pho spot, Pho Bang. Nothing makes you feel better after a long night than some hot pho.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shoutout Terisa Simpson, she has pushed me every single day to always be my best. She has been by my side from the start of my business, and has also played a major role in getting BENNYXBLACK to where it is today. Without her BENNYXBLACK might have still been in the idea phase. She is full of great advice and a fiery soul.
