We had the good fortune of connecting with Bernette Turbinton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bernette, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success and the success of my brand began with me doing my homework, researching the industry, along with having a hustle and entrepreneur sense of business. This was was all critical in getting started. The pandemic pushed me and my family into a mode of survival, creativity and exploration. We knew we had purpose and it had to begin with investing in our “unknown” future (whatever that would look like). The Hibachi business has generally been a male dominant industry. I wanted in and I knew I had to go hard in order to make my mark. We decided it would be not just catering but Hibachi and “With A Twist!”. In doing this we created alternative menus, a signature “Twisted Tea”, which is an adult beverage, a champagne toast, a homemade Asian Spiced Gumbo and our in-house prepared garlic butter, which are all complimentary with our services and have all received rave reviews.

Another highlight of the business for which we continue to stand out from the pack is with our custom designed decor. We offer layouts and extravagant table designs set up by our professionally certified staff, who provide exemplary service.

Quality products and services are definitely key.

What should our readers know about your business?
Hibachi With A Twist is a Woman & Minority owned business. We celebrate diversity, team and family. Creating both elegant and casual celebration atmosphere’s. We are currently working on a patent for our “Signature TWISTED Tea”,

We are extremely proud of our ability to start a business during COVID-19, becoming known in the community as a reputable caterer and full event service.

While it has taken a huge amount of time, energy and hard work, it has been well worth it!

The initial challenges of learning what works, establishing best practices and getting our “TWISTED grove” in the business, were a few of our biggest hurdles.
Those same hurdles have made us stronger and better at what we do.

The world should know that we are here to stay as an elite catering service, providing quality food, entertainment, products and other top notch services.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d take them to one of the area churches on Sunday, Dinner at home, hosted by Hibachi With A Twist or at one of my favorite soul food spots, “This is it!”

Through out the week we’d visit The Aquarium, the Buffalo Soldiers Museum, The Houston Space Museum, Kemah Boardwalk, Shopping at the Galleria Mall and local boutiques. We’d also visit the water wall for photos.

Spots for dinner and hanging out would include, Phil and Derek’s Jazz & Dinner Club, Chapman and Kirby, 5015 on Almeda, The Heights for clubbing and dining, Martini Blu, Pappadeaux’s, Vic& Anthony’s, Pele Pele and Discovery Green.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and extended family have been the backbone of my success. A special Shout out and dedication to my husband, Darrell who handles all of the labor and logistics. My sister, Nicole Miller who is my Head Designer, my Chef’s (Miguel Puac, Joshua Sam, Turquoise Kelly), Service Staff as well as a wealth of other angel investors, friends & family.

They have all supported, encouraged, pushed and helped elevate my ambitious desires to run a successful business that we all could be proud of.
