Hi Brooklynn, what makes you happy? Why?
MUSIC! Although the thought of music bringing joy into my life sounds as simple as counting from 1 to 10, music is how I discovered the true meaning of happiness. As a child, it was challenging for me to express and communicate my emotions. Bottling up these emotions drove me and my loved ones into a state of distress. You ever had a dream where you open your mouth and nothing comes out even when you try to scream, cry, or yell? This is the only valid explanation of how I felt when attempting to express myself. With lots of consideration and patience, my parents found ways to get me to open up and communicate how I was feeling. Still, to no avail, I thought there was no solution to my situation. Then, all of a sudden, as if the clouds had disappeared above me revealing the bright, yellow sun, Christmas Day came. I still remember opening that Christmas gift: the gift of an inevitable breakthrough I was about to receive in helping me find happiness. My first ever DJ turntables were displayed after tearing through the gift wrap, and THIS was when I discovered the true meaning of happiness. “Alexa, can you play, “Express Yourself by N.W.A?”‘ Because with the power of music, I was able to find myself and express myself. Music was an outlet. Music was and STILL is my happiness!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In a world where division exists, I believe music has the ability to make people spiritually connect with others. You may hear various types of music or genres circulating across social media and ask yourself, “Why is this song so catchy?”

My sole purpose in this life is to equate that same euphoric experience of unity by DJing. My journey of spreading my love through music was not easy. Learning how to mix, playing the right songs, and creating an amazing experience for my customers altogether took a bit of time to flawlessly execute. When I was introduced with my first DJ turntables, I was indulged in learning its contents and functions every single day. In the midst of my DJ journey, I dealt with hardships. When the Coronavirus outbreak occurred, I had to get creative, and switch to DJing virtually. Adjusting my services to the ongoing changes presented in the world was difficult, but still brought many opportunities along with joy. I have been DJing for 8 beautiful years, and I am proud of my success and all that I have done to get to where I am right now. It is hard to imagine that I was a very shy and private kid when DJing requires the exact opposite of those characteristics. The passion I have for DJing made me who I am today, and I enjoy every second of creating a positive, musical experience for all!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Good morning and salutations! My name is Brooklynn Spears, famously known as DJ Brookie Cookie, and I will be your tour guide today and show you the perfect spots in the Houston area – so sit back and relax and enjoy the ride!

The first stop is the Breakfast Klub. Known as one of the best breakfast places in the nation, the best time to eat at this restaurant is right when it opens as it is always packed. Serving the most juiciest and crunchiest fried chicken that would have the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich running for their lives, I usually get one of their signature dishes called “wings & waffles.” This plate is served with a fluffy, Belgian waffle and chicken wings all topped with powdered sugar. This savory dish is something you CAN’T resist!

The second stop is the Houston Zoo. After demolishing that dish from the Breakfast Klub, it is time to burn off those calories by walking through the zoo. Make sure you have your camera ready, because you will see all types of wildlife that are picture-worthy!

The last stop is a special treat: Sweet Paris! This restaurant is known for their amazing crepes and breakfast! But since we just ate breakfast, we will get dessert. I get the Nutella Strawberries Crepe that are to die for. This will have your taste buds singing sweet melodies as you bite into this savory treat!

I dedicate my shoutout to my Mom, Niki Spears, and my Dad, Kermit Spears: they deserve their flowers for supporting and guiding me through my journey. As a baby, my parents noticed whenever a song was playing, I would mimic the melodies and tunes that other people wouldn’t normally hear with a simple ear. Without them, I wouldn’t have found my extraordinary gift of bringing joy and happiness to people with my DJing. Thank you Mom and Dad for being my #1 fans!
