We had the good fortune of connecting with Cedar Stevens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cedar, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
My customers trust my expertise and integrity. They know that I am a stickler for the traditional methods of production and that I am keenly researched on the lore, legend and science of my field. When customers write to me with a question, they will get at least a paragraph, and they trust that if I don’t know, I will say so or find out, often both!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My business is the formulation and production of traditional magick potions to accomplish goals in life and spiritual endeavors. I have the science, the know-how of the tradition as well as the experience of the botany and gardening of the materia magica of the plants. Much of this is information that can be researched and cataloged, but the ART is in the fragrance language of my ingredients. For example, any full-line metaphysical manufacturer may have a Good Job oil formulation, but even without any knowledge of the plant materials that go into such a traditional potion will smell it and UNDERSTAND, in a deep part of their brain, that this oil “smells” like: money, likeability, charm, confidence and the intellectual resourcefulness to get the job done (and to ace the interview!). While adhering to traditional uses of plants, I have created an internally consistent language using the scents. For example, there is a particular essential oil that conveys “energy” and “flight, airborne” and that ingredient is in both Eagle oil and Bat oil. Another ingredient conveys “night” and “space”, so that will be in Bat, whereas Eagle will have ingredients that code for “sunlight.” Each ingredient then becomes an an adjective that describes a quality of the intention, deity, or spirit guide. In the right combination, in the right proportions, my potion can communicates the essence of an idea in the same way that a visual artist would use color, composition and brushstrokes to evoke the deep-set emotions and memories that go with the message. It is my hope that this system on nonverbal conceptualization reinforces the practitioner’s verbal, language based intention setting to create the change desired in an aesthetically harmonious and sensual way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love this question! I love showing off the culture of Austin (or at least I did before pandemic, so let’s assume a pre- or post-pandemic Austin! We will go for an afternoon swim at Barton Springs, borrow some hoola hoops from the yoginis for play. Then I will tempt them to go on a “short” hike up Barton Creek to find a natural swimming hole in a wildish place. Retire to some traditional Tex-Mex and margaritas at a few lesser-known traditional establishments. The places with dangerously seductive hot sauces. Take in some theater at The VORTEX and drinks at Butterfly Bar, the best of politically relevant entertainment and the friendliest aspects of hipster culture. Attend a Full Moon ritual or Sabbat ceremony with real witches for a joyful, spooky and spiritual experience. Protest with Black Lives Matters at the police station. Lazy days of tacos, pot smoking, exploring used clothing stores, Waterloo records and friends’ sofas and porch swings. Finding some local bands at off 6th-Street bars at night. Stroll through Sunshine Community Gardens and get botanically nerdy with some enthusiastic elder, youth and visually impaired gardeners.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to send a big shoutout to Bonnie Cullum and The VORTEX. The VORTEX is a theater and theater company that brings dangerous, relevant edgewalking theater to the community in Austin Texas. More than any one other entity, The VORTEX has nurtured Natural Magick Shop professionally and me personally to heal, to experiment, to grow and bring magick to the Austin area and beyond.
