We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Erickson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
I would say, teaching them to push past the doubts they have about themselves. Labels do not get to define them or the success they will have in their lives. Just like I did not let the labels and fear define me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I had my first daughter, I was so inscure when it came to reading to her. Due to my struggle with dyslexia and fear, I often avoided that part of the bedtime routine. I decided to write my own story for her. It wasnt until I partnered with my ULTRA talented sister-in-law Kiren Garcia, for the illustrations that I saw just how special these books could truly be. Kiren totally understood the voice of the character and my vision. I’ve loved our brainstorming sessions, it’s never felt like work to partner with her. I feel the lighthearted and fun illustrations paired with my stories make us the best team. I could not do it without her. It’s been an amazing journey. Seeing how far not only I’ve come to push past my insecurities but how far the poppy books have come! AParty for Poppy and A Garden for Poppy can be found on Barnes and Noble, Walmart and Amazon! I will never stop feeling overwhelmed and blown away that people want Poppy to be a part of their bookshelves and family.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First I would take any friend around to all the hidden gems in Downtown Richmond. Between places like, Blockhouse coffee with delicious drinks and space for kiddos to play, it’s an easy place to add to any trip. Through Juice is another fav. They have so many great healthy options. I love to get a smoothie to go and walk around all the excellent shops nearby. If it was the weekend. We would hit up both, the local Farmers Market in Richmond, and also the Farmers Market in Houston, after that we would definitely hop over to Verdine for bruunch or lunch. Omg. They have the best Orange Cauliflower! I feel so lucky to live in a place like Houston with so many opportunities for fun outings with family or friends.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, the spectacular children’s book authors that came before me. Without their creativity and courage to follow their own dreams I would not be here. All other credit and recognition goes to family. I would not be who I am without each of their guidance and support. To my Husband for being my everything, and supporting every dream I have. To my Mom, for believing in me even when I didnt belive in myself. To my Dad, for always showing up and encouraging me. To my siblings, for helping to make our childhood fun and full of inspo for my books. And finally. My children, who make me want to be better each and every day.
