We had the good fortune of connecting with Cynthia Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cynthia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to open a salon that empowers hairstylists to get back to why they fell in love with the industry. Offering a space where we embrace a work life balance and mental health instead of the mind set of hustle culture. All while providing an amazing experience for clients, not JUST another service. An experience that includes flat fee hourly pricing, gratuity free, and no double booking.

What should our readers know about your business?
I have always wanted to be a hairstylist. As a little girl (even as early as elementary) I remember cutting my own hair, my sisters hair, and even the neighbors! This has been something I have been passionate about my whole life. I became a mother very young, and was blessed enough to be able to stay home to raise my babies. However, when I was ready, I went back to what I was passionate about. Hair! One of the things I am proud of is going back to school while raising 6 children, and my husband who worked long days to support my dreams. My beginnings as a hairstylist didn’t exactly have the mentorship and positive foundations I would have loved to have. But through that I was able to persevere and grow. Not only continue to have a career doing the thing I love most, but establish amazing relationships . My goal as a stylist and salon owner is to help other people in my industry, empower them, create opportunities for growth, and support behind the chair as well as bringing awareness to mental health for hair stylist. I truly believe that providing these things will produce an amazing environment not only for the stylist but for the clients also. Being able to provide not just a service but an amazing customized experience for each person that comes to Salon Mood.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Spend a day with me and my family! Some of my favorite places are going to be my local shops and restaurants! I am a coffee first kinda girl. Pearland coffee roasters is the cutest place, with an amazing cup of Joe! Another favorite of mine would be Ms. Norma’s Café for the all day breakfast and the best tacos in town! If you have a sweet tooth, Yellow Apron baking Co. has the goods covered! Emma’s Mexican Restaurant has great drinks, with a big variety menu. And you will definitely catch me and my family at a UH Cougars football game!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to take this moment to dedicate this Shoutout to my family. My mom and dad for always being so supportive of me. My husband who is my number one fan. And my kids for being my reason and motivation to always want to push forward, be the best version of myself and a role model to them. I am so blessed and thankful to God for these gifts.
