We had the good fortune of connecting with Danielle Lenz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Danielle, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always had a love for art, even at a young age. I would often draw and doodle on anything in site and even worked at a pottery store in Sugar Land as a teenager and into my college years. However, it wasn’t until after I gave birth to my daughter, Elena, that DL Creations became a vision of mine.

In 2012 children’s milestones boards were a huge trend among new parents and a great way to keep track of all your child’s firsts. I started getting attention when I began to create my daughter’s chalkboard milestones and posted them on Facebook for all our friends and family to see. These usually consisted of fun fonts and a few drawings. Soon after I had friends contacting me to create their children’s first birthday chalkboards and from there DL Creations was born. Little did I know then where this journey would lead to and all the amazing projects that would follow. Not only was I following a passion of mine but I was creating an income that truly brought me joy.

As time passed, I began to explore with new ideas and materials. Today I work with a wide range of products including chalk, oil based markers and pens, but mostly acrylics and interior wall paint fill my studio. I have expanded my gift to wedding signage, painted bibles, canvas art, hand painted denim jackets, custom shoes and wall murals.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always loved a good challenge and the wonderful thing about art is that there are no rules! Over the years DL Creations has blossomed and I have been fortunate to explore many avenues such as hand painted custom denim jackets, wall murals, painted bibles, custom canvases as well as wedding and party signage. At this time, my hand painted denim jackets have been trending the most. I’ve created jackets for Houston Astros lovers, football and cheer teams, as well as bridal jackets for the big day.

Murals have become a passion of mine in the last few years. I have been honored to create murals for personal residences but work mostly with both small and large businesses. Just within the past year I have created murals for three trendy boutiques, a fast-growing energy company, a local hair salon as well as a few other amazing businesses.

Each project is unique in its own way and it’s hard to narrow down my favorites. Art takes time and patience and can be a rollercoaster of emotions; the butterflies before I begin, the excitement and determination, the frustration when something isn’t feeling right, the thrill when I get my groove again and the happiness in seeing my clients faces and hear their joy when their piece is complete. Every design carries a piece of my heart, soul and time and I take pride in the finished product. This is what drives my business to be its very best and to continue doing what I love. It’s what DL Creations is all about.

The possibilities are endless with DL Creations and its future. The thing I love most is being able to dip my toes into a little bit of everything and broaden my range of projects. Being able to pickup a paint brush and see where it leads me is not only exciting but gives me an adrenaline rush that is difficult to put into words. As my skill level improves I hope to continue to work on murals as well as the custom painted jackets but I will always strive to challenge myself and try new things.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The great thing about Houston is that it offers endless possibilities and packed full of adventure! My top favorite place has to be Minute Maid Park! There is nothing better than baseball, beer and cheering on the Astros! It also helps when I’m decked out in my favorite Astros gear.

Another fun adventure would be The Houston Zoo. With kids, it’s a great place to explore and seeing all the animals is so much fun. Fun fact: my husband and I actually got married at The Houston Zoo in 2008 so it’s always a fun place to visit and reminisce.

Our number one date night food would have to be Bludorn on Taft St. If you haven’t been make a reservation and order the octopus for your appetizer, you will not regret it and the dessert is delectable!

If tattoos is your thing, Shaws Tattoo Studio on Westheimer is my number one go to!

Lastly, if you’re needing inspiration and want to be surrounded by colorful art take a visit to Winter Street! There are so many talented artists and studios to visit. Houston really has it all!

While living in the outskirts of Houston, we are right in between Katy and Sugar Land, we get the best of both worlds. From shopping Chilton Avenue, Vintage Hope Boutique and Teal Poppy to brunch at Postino and date night at Pearl & Vine, the area is a great place to have it all without traveling far.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be following this dream of mine if it wasn’t for the love and support of my husband, Christopher. He has always encouraged me in this journey and pushed me create a business that gives me validation and purpose. My husband has always given me the freedom to be creative and has helped me wherever needed both at home and raising our two amazing children, Elena and Cameron. Between balancing being a mother and running a small business it can often be a little overwhelming but Christopher gives me the strength and encouragement to do my best in all the areas of life. He’s my solid foundation!
