We had the good fortune of connecting with David Settle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Get rich and make a lot of money! 😂 But seriously, what many fail to realize is that I started my first business when I was only in college, I was incredibly young, and somewhat unrealistic in my expectations. As a matter of fact, it was a class project that my professor encouraged me to pursue. What began as a mere hobby and side hustle – just DJ’ing parties, and events here and there, eventually grew into a multiple six-figure wedding enterprise! Plus, while in college… all my friends were getting married who needed a DJ, so I had a ripe clientele base to get me started.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
So, DJS Entertainment is a very simple business model that has been around for decades. At our core we provide upscale wedding entertainment and production. (Basically DJ’s, Emcee’s, Photobooths, special lighting and fx… literally anything you need to create a magical wedding). What separates us, from others in such an overly saturated industry – there are literally tons and tons of wedding DJ’s in houston – are three (3) things: 1) we are REAL DJ’s! Not just some guy with a laptop and some speakers! We mix on turntables and can actually entertain your guests beyond just playing songs. 2) we are an actual business – as opposed to a lot of the part-time, dj companies who just do it on the ‘side’ 3) we ONLY do weddings! We pride ourselves in being wedding experts! You won’t find us in the club or block parties or anything like that. We spend all of our energy and effort being the BEST WEDDING experts ever! One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that at the end of the day… we serve people! Regardless of how many clients we have, or what kind of sophisticated technology we use nothing is more important then the people we serve. I am very proud of all 5 star reviews, awards, and satisfied couples we’ve had the pleasure of serving but it’s all because we made an intentional effort to HEAR and LISTEN to our couples. We take time to meet them, get to know them, learn about their wedding vision, musical preferences, and even about their lives. It’s a privilege to be invited to someone’s wedding… and to be included in one the most memorable and special days of someone’s life is something we take very seriously. We got to where we are today not because of some magic secret, or social media hack, or get rich quick lead generation formula… (although we’ve tried a lot of that stuff). On the contrary, our brand grew one wedding at a time! In the beginning I personally made tons and tons of calls daily, to potential couples, to other wedding professionals, I performed countless discounted and even free events, and made it a priority to make sure everyone in the wedding world knew who DJS Entertainment was and that we were serious! And to this day, through recessions, hurricanes and now a pandemic we are able to still operate – not because of our fail proof marketing strategies- but because of our real relationships. A big chuck of our leads come from other wedding professionals who like working with us and trust us enough to refer us to their clients. And of course we get a ton of referrals from previous couples that we’ve celebrated with! As a matter of fact, we just performed a wedding and in attendance were 4 previous clients/couples!!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So for starters… you can’t come to the H without stopping by the Turkey Leg Hut! The food is amazing and Lynn and Nakia are the coolest! We would definitely have to hit up the graffiti wall in EaDo to snap some photo’s and get some great content to post. No trip to Houston would be complete without a little shopping spree at the galleria… and then sneak over to my guys at the Shoeboxx Houston to get some of the dopest rarest sneakers on the planet! Then if there here on Sunday, it’s a MUST that we stop by Fellowship Houston for church where Pastor VonWon always delivers a powerful uplifting message of encouragement. And in terms of transportation, we’d have to hit up Luxo Exotics to get something special to ride around the city in… anything from the Rolls Royce Cullinan to a Lamborghini! Then at some point we’ve got to make a stop by Exotic Pop, catch the AM Wake Up show with Kiotti, and there’s always cool bike tours around downtown! And if Covid isn’t an issue, the house of blues and Revention always have great shows, the improv… I could literally go on and on and on! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wow, there are so many influential people in my life that have contributed to the person I am today. For starters, my late Grandmother who passed on her kindness, goodwill, and love for people as well as instilled the importance of education and to never stop learning even beyond the classroom. Her example taught me how to treat people, and to care and have compassion and empathy. My father-in-law, was and still is a major influence. He introduced me to faith, Jesus and helped mentor me after high school during a very pivotal period of my life. I was headed in a very different direction before our paths crossed – and let’s just say I’m eternally grateful for his Most of all, my story wouldn’t be complete without the mother of my kids! It’s impossible to sum up her support and contribution in words. She was there when we had nothing, not even a mattress, and she was there when we had everything. Dale, helped me take a dream and organize it so that it would run like machine with systems, procedures and order! She always challenged me to give my all and was never shy when it came to telling me the truth about some of my crazy ideas, or anything for that matter! She has always been my biggest cheerleader, critic, coach and even consultant all in one! I could literally go on and on…needless to say I wouldn’t be anything without her influence and support.
