We had the good fortune of connecting with Dedrick Donnell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dedrick, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Honestly, I just didn’t want to report into or work for anyone else. I was tired of the rat race and feeling like my life was just wasting away. It amazes me how people go to work for 8 hours, some 9 because they pay you for an hour that you’d rather they just tack on at the end and let you leave early. In those wasted hours, you may do a total of 2-3 hours of work and the rest of the time you’re shopping, daydreaming and wishing you were where you are at that moment. So, basically the fact that time and freedom became the most important thing in my life than money is the reason I felt the entrepreneurial life was for me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Fresh Cuisine came to me in a dream while complaining to GOD about not being where I actually thought he should have placed me. Thats what was funny though, he had already given me gifts but I hadn’t taken advantage or leaped in my purpose through faith. Many times GOD gives us gifts to enhance out lifestyle financially but we allow lack of belief in ourselves or fear stop us from being a blessing to everyone. Fresh Cuisine is a meal prep company that specializes in making healthy food taste Omazing (combo of OMG & Amazing). I want my clients to feel like they aren’t missing out on anything, especially taste. This is my passion, to have someone call me & tell me that the doctor has taken them off of medication because they dont need it any longer. That is a major booster in knowing that I am going in the right direction. One major lesson I have learned is great customer service is the key! Find a way to always be accommodating or at least make the client feel like you are. Another is find you passion and pursue it. It doesn’t matter what’s going on, trust and make it happen. Your passion will make way for you in many areas.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s funny. Houston is the land of brunches, parties & more parties. So as a chef, it’s kinda hard for me to find a place that I love to eat at. I’d probably take them to The Fish for sushi & to bother the bartender Linda, who has been my friend for ages. I’d then go…you know, I’d probably go back home and cook an amazing meal and invite people over. This covid thing has me rethinking my whole life.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to Shoutout my mother, Diana L. Donnell-Mason. She has truly been my rock when I was down. She always spoke life into me and would never allow me to give up even when that seemed like the only option. She would just pray over me and pull back up on my feet.. The crazy thing that gives me even more admiration for her is, she comes to me for advice many times. I love her so dearly and appreciate her for being vulnerable!
