We had the good fortune of connecting with Deljon Lister and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deljon, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
What we value most is consistency! We believe that many businesses suffer from a lack of being consistent. You never know what type of product or service that you’re going to receive! We want our customers to know that when they hire A-Que Lister‘s, they’re going to have a great experience with both our professionalism and eating our food, everytime! We never promise to be the cheapest, but we do promise that you’ll get great value for your dollar!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
A-que Lister’s is a family owned and operated business that was started in 2009. The Team members are Deljon Lister, Angela Lister, Davion Lister Jayvon Lister, Julian Lister , & our adopted Mom, Ms Edna Butler. We at A-Que Lister’s BBQ pride ourselves in always doing it right the first time , every time! We work really hard at this so we do not take complaints lightly. We feel that this approach sets us apart from others as we do not approach complaints as just being part of the business. We are most proud of being able to start a family legacy of entrepreneurship for our family. Running a business is very hard work, but we have a model that helps us overcome challenges that says Pray, Prepare, Execute Our Plan, then Live with the Results. We generally approach our day to day like this in both business and life. We want the world to get use to the Lister Brand because it is here to stay!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are literally homebodies but If our best Friend were to visit, we’d have to take them to Houston’s Galleria area. We are sure to find something to get into there. Westheimer rd in Houston seemingly has every type of bar, restaurant and interesting people of all colors and creeds.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been many people who have helped me to cultivate my craft during the years, but there are a few people in particular that are most instrumental in my development. First there’s my grandfather A.Q. Lister. He’s who everyone says that I get my Pit Smoking Skills from. There’s my Father “Jerry” who taught me hard work and discipline. There is my brother from another mother , Phillip Green who sat me down and gave me Firestarter 101 over a cold 24 oz beer. There’s my good Friend Mr. Raymond Carey, even though he didn’t know that I was listening that evening as he explained the different affects of different kinds of Smoking Woods. There’s our God parents Ken & Brenda Freeman who shared many business Ideas early on. There’s my cousin Phillip who enlightened me to the science of cooking. In order to be a great cook, you have to be intentional about what you are doing. That means knowing not only what happened, but why it happened. There’s mentors like Paul Wolford, Curtis Woods, David Weatherall, Douglas Womack and Elzie Tubbs who helped me with different techniques and who would encourage me to keep cooking when times were rough and I wanted to quit. Theres my family, in-laws, and Friends who have supported us from day 1. Last but not least , there’s my Uncle Thomas. When he asked “Who Smoked this meat” at my first cookout in 2003, I knew I had the tools!
