We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick “premo” Riddick Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Derrick “Premo”, how do you think about risk?
Risk-taking has always been a key part of my journey, especially as an independent audio engineer and artist. I believe calculated risks are essential for growth—whether it’s investing in my own studio, Bricc By Bricc, or stepping out of my comfort zone to collaborate with other creatives. My decision to pursue music full-time after serving in the Navy and attending The Recording Conservatory of Austin was a huge leap, but it shaped me into the professional I am today. Every risk I’ve taken has been a step toward defining my own path, and it’s that boldness that fuels my creativity and ambition.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a reflection of my journey—grounded in authenticity, hard work, and resilience. What sets me apart is my ability to combine the technical side of audio engineering with the creativity of being an artist and producer. I don’t just mix tracks; I understand the vision behind the music because I live both sides of it. I’m most proud of building Bricc By Bricc Recording Studio from the ground up and using it as a space to elevate others, not just myself.
Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy. The transition from military life to the music industry was a challenge, especially learning the technicalities of audio engineering at The Recording Conservatory of Austin while balancing my passion as an artist. There were many long nights, self-doubt, and sacrifices. But I learned that persistence, consistency, and being willing to take risks are key. Surrounding myself with like-minded people helped, too.
What I want people to know about me and my brand, whether it’s Bricc By Bricc or Premo the Great, is that I’m all about progress and building something from nothing. My story is one of perseverance and passion, and I’m committed to creating tools and spaces that empower other artists. I want to leave a legacy not just as an artist, but as someone who built opportunities for others.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting Houston for a week, we’d definitely hit up some of my favorite local spots. We’d start the mornings at Mo Better Brews, where they’ve got incredible vegan breakfast options and craft coffee. It’s got a chill vibe perfect for catching up.
For lunch, I’d take them to Ike’s Love and Sandwiches. The sandwiches are always on point, and there’s something for everyone, whether you’re craving something classic or something a bit more unique.
As far as places to visit, we’d spend some time exploring Buffalo Bayou Park—there’s no better spot for enjoying the outdoors and taking in the city’s skyline. For a cultural stop, we’d check out the Museum District, especially the Houston Museum of African American Culture. At night, we’d head over to Midtown or EaDo for drinks and live music. Houston’s nightlife is diverse, and there’s always something happening, from underground shows to art pop-ups.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mentors and instructors in the music industry, My Family and My Partner Remani, The Book “Think Like A Monk” and Reading Affirmations for the Black Men.
