We had the good fortune of connecting with Dorina Carrillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dorina, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Ever since I was young, I have been a free spirited and animated person. I am an only child, so coming up with creative ways to stay entertained and get other’s attention, has always been my thing! I also started dancing ballet at an early age, so my love and appreciation for the visual and performing arts has always had a special place in my heart.

As I got older, I knew I wanted to study communications and pursue a creative career. While I was in college at the University of St. Thomas, I had the opportunity to intern at an advertising agency where I learned a lot about public relations, creative writing, and video production. After graduation, I went on to work in luxury retail for a few years and was exposed to several different brands, trends and styles that helped me stay in the creative world. I later went on to work at one of the largest media stations doing media sales and then my life changed forever. Unfortunately, in 2014 I lost my mother to breast cancer and that was one of the hardest things I ever been though.

While I was grieving my mother’s loss, I decided to take a break from my routine and work on myself and so I could find my new purpose. In the summer of 2015, I decided to embark on a solo trip to Asia for a month to find myself and I’m happy to report that it was a success! While I traveled around Bali, S. Korea and Japan I met many wonderful people from around the world and I connected with nature in a way I have never done before. When I came back, I knew I had found my purpose in life, which was to give back to the community and help people in need. Since then, I have gotten my master’s degree in communications from Syracuse University and became the first person in my immediate family to get a master’s degree. I am also proud to say I get to do what I LOVE every day! I get to give back to the community by working in community relations and I get to be creative too by also working in video production.

In the summer of 2016, a good friend of mine and I decided to start a fun blog called “The Colorful Chronicle”! We created this blog so we could share with others a few tips and tricks of new and exciting places around Houston and the world! However, since 2018, I have been running this blog on my own during my free time, but the mission is still the same. I still share some fun tips about my travels around the world, the different marathons and races I participate in and about fun places around Houston. I love that I get to be creative every day and that I get to share with others about my unique experiences.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
