We had the good fortune of connecting with Chef Kellz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chef, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process was definitely planning and writing down all of my goals. After that, I took action because faith without action is dead! I also implanted in my mind that I wasn’t going to see results right away. That was the best way for me to avoid disappointment. Starting a business is definitely a lot of trial and error!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started “Chef Kellz Culinary Services” about four years ago with my first year and a half strictly just planning. I did a lot of research on what license and insurance I needed, pricing, marketing etc. It has been a long process and I’ve failed a few times but I managed to never quit, I might have taken a couple of breaks, but I never gave up completely, that’s just not my forte. Challenges? Where do I begin, I have faced so many challenges and setbacks within a long period of time but I didn’t let it break me because I just knew that was it God telling me it wasn’t my time just yet. I’ve learned serval lessons along the way with being patient being the most important one. My brand is definitely one of a kind and I’ve always considered the “FAB 5” which is my five signature dished but most importantly the five words I go by: Dedication, Consistency, Faith, Strength, & Pray! I feel like whether you’re thinking about starting a business or are currently running one, those 5 words need to be instilled in your mind!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So I have a few spots I like to go to in the city of Houston. As far as restaurants go I definitely would say Lotus Seafood, Turkey Leg Hut and Taste Bar & Kitchen are my favorites. The night life is always litty lol but Houston is so big there’s a lot of entertainment down here so it would be best to plan ahead!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a huge shoutout to my mom and sister. They have been by my side through every step of the way.
