We had the good fortune of connecting with Dwayne Woods and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dwayne, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
The Ms. Lucille Fitness Challenge promotes mental and physical health through fitness. By way of social media, the challenge (exercising 87 consecutive days) has connected people all over the world. People who have participated in this challenge have shared emotional testimonies, gained amazing mental and physical results, and overall improved their lives. The fitness challenge also sells apparel to fund the community outreach program. After the first year, we set a goal to raise $500.00 for the foundation. The goal now is $5,000.00 to make a bigger impact to the community through education and effective outreach.
What should our readers know about your business?
I was blessed to be able to start a business and a foundation. The Ms. Lucille Challenge Foundation was created in 2016 and Unchartered Horizons Marketing in 2014, with hurdles respectively in both. Starting a business always has challenges, such as cash flow and/or sustainability with respect to clients & income. Regardless of the obstacle, I DID NOT QUIT! The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is stay consistent and always stand by your morals. Building a brand takes years, so you have to stay diligent in your approach. The Ms. Lucille Challenge brand is all about helping your physical and mental health in an encouraging space, all while giving back to the community. Unchartered Horizon brand is “taking your business behind the horizon” offering website design and digital marketing services.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Strangely enough, I have friends, colleagues and/or associates that come in town every weekend, so I get this question A LOT. When people ask, “Where are some places to go in Houston?”, my first question is “What vibe are you looking for?”. Houston has many things to offer that it is difficult to see it all in one visit. Some of my favorites are: boating in Galveston, Chapman and Kirby on Sunday Funday, Taste Kitchen & Bar, LA Crawfish Shack for some amazing crawfish, bar hopping in midtown, L27 Rooftop Lounge, City Centre, Mico’s Hot chicken in the Heights (to get a taste of Tennessee in Texas), and many other food places (way too many to name). I would also suggest exploring the green space in the city such as Buffalo Bayou Park, Studemont Park, Memorial Park and Discovery Green.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I would like to give a huge shoutout to God! God inspired me to create this fitness challenge during a very tough time in my life. I would also like to give a huge shoutout to the people. The people are what makes this challenge possible and allows it to continue to grow. As I always say, “this challenge is nothing without the people”. My community back home (North Memphis, Hollywood) always deserves a shoutout for shaping me into the man I am today. A shoutout is in order for Zone Fitness Training (ZFT), an amazing run club that’s in Houston & Dallas, TX. They have been extremely supportive in taking this challenge to another level. Last but not least, I would like to give a huge shoutout to my family, my late grandparents including Ms. Lucille Bernard for setting the example and inspiration.
