We had the good fortune of connecting with Geronima Vega-Fernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Geronima, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Never in my mind thought I was going to start my own business. I had lean on Photography as a hobby and lead to developing a special interest since I was in my High School years during my sophomore year. With time, I noticed that I did not want to stop and put the camera down. Literally, I wanted to get more involved with school events and family events and, even though I didn’t know what I was doing, I just wanted to keep going to see where clicking the camera could lead to. And here we are, 2 years later, capturing different moments of life in different perspectives in my way of seeing those special moments.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Geronima’s Genuine Photography started in 2021. It was definitely not easy since I felt I had dived into the ocean not knowing how to swim. I felt so intimidated and small at the very beginning because there is just so many talented people in the Photography Industry and I felt I could never reach that. I still am learning day by day different techniques and different ways to get better and better when I shoot a session in general. But you cannot expect to grow without putting in the work! And we all start somewhere, being either clueless or struggling to understanding certain areas or things, but if we want to continue growing and continue delivering amazing content, then we have to do our research, we have to stop being scared of failing, because with failing, you can grasp that and say to yourself, “I want to be better than this! I want more and feel satisfied with myself.” So, to me, Photography is a way of expressing yourself and being honored to be a part of a special moment in someone else’s life. To me, it’s never about how much I can make, but what I can make to give someone else to cherish for a lifetime.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came to visit a couple of days, I would first start off with heading out to the Downtown Houston area. All the skyscrapers, restaurants, and nearby parks are all so good. Even having a trip on the Metro Trail would be a fun way to cruise around the city. Definitely would dine in at a “Five Guys” restaurant, because their burgers are super tasty and worth the drive! A walk around “Hermann Park” wouldn’t be so bad either. The different sceneries you get to pass by are just stunning. (Hey! Might even take my camera with me to take a few shots of them.) And if there was some concerts or events around the city, a few of those wouldn’t be so bad. The vibes here in Houston are amazing!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Beginning of 2021, I literally had no one to lean on or go to for advice since I was so, so new to this industry and really, I thought I had no potential in growing as much as I have now. But, meeting all these amazing people throughout the months of starting my Photography business, I couldn’t be happier and more grateful for the community I ended up with.
Gloria Martinez, owner of “Photo x Glo, LLC”, was one of the first photographers that I reached out whenever I felt stuck or had curiosity on what materials to use for a cake smash, or newborn, or where were good locations to shoot at and editing software and the list goes on. She is super sweet and a great listener and honest person who I can say is my friend.
Alejandro Rivera, also known as “Alex”, owner of “Riveras Photography, LLC”, is such a goofball but also has been a great listener and advisor in do’s and don’ts for any photo shoot. His energy is very contagious, and His wife is so supportive and sweet I couldn’t be happier to have meet them both last year in 2022. It’s funny to say that we had been virtual buddies for the longest and that didn’t stop us from asking each other for advice or sharing thoughts.
Karina Torres, owner or “Bellalinas Couture” and “Bellalinas Studios”, has been such a great help with not just her gown rental, but now her own studio as well. She is very sweet and seeing her growth each and every time she posts, is truly inspiring! I hope to get to keep growing together and stronger each time.
The list can go on and on with such amazing business I have encountered throughout these short months of my Photography Journey, but the list would be endless. I truly cannot express how grateful I am for so many of y’all and your creative minds and support, but most importantly, your friendship!!
