We had the good fortune of connecting with Ginger Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ginger, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had been working in the hotel industry for about 14 years and not making much progress when my friend/co-worker came back from a trip to California. She was telling me about this place called Afters. I had wanted to own my own place for some time, but my husband and I felt we could not take the risk while our kids were so young. But now they are older and I began researching the amount of funds required to start up an ice cream shop. It was roughly $150,000. I began selling the idea to my husband and he said let’s go for it. I went full steam ahead!!! As a kid, I learned from my Dad- he had his own business. I knew it would not be easy, but I am a very hard worker and wanted it. During the process of of creating a business plan and requesting a loan, we met some truly amazing, helpful people that assisted us to get going. My dream was starting to come true and it was very exciting!!!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Opening my first business was not easy. We had a ton of things to learn, but we some how kept meeting really fantastic teachers along the way. Getting a contractor and keeping a contractor was probably that hardest part of the opening. We opened much later than we anticipated because of the contractor. Our budgeted funds for the three months of operation were depleted due to rent. When we opened our doors, we had very little money in the bank. We finally opened in August 2019 and winter was around the corner. It was a rough start, but we kept going. Then in March of 2020 COVID hit and brought us to our knees. We were forced to close down the month of April (which had a positive- I needed a small break). Our landlord was working with us a bit, so we felt like we were going to make it. However in December of 2020, we closed our doors for good because we could no longer pay rent. In January, my landlord decided they would like to try to work with us some more. On February 3, 2021 we opened our doors once again with high hopes. We have had some assistance from the government programs that have helped keep us afloat. I am very proud of my team, my family and myself. I believe in the Gooey’s concept. We have a great product, great reviews and I want us all to succeed.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live and work in Cypress, Texas. I love it here. I used to drive downtown 5 days out of the week, so I absolutely avoid that at all costs now. But I still have some very favorite spots!!!
I love the Fuzzy’s pizza off of Antoine. Delish!!! Have you ever had the dumplings at Doozo at the Park Shops downtown- omg- I could eat these every day of my life. The veggie and pork ones are my favorite.
If it is my pick- Berryhill or Treebeards any day!!
I am simple, but love to eat.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When I was at the Four Seasons Hotel Houston I was a member of the Women in Leadership group. I was actually reluctant to join this group, but attended my first meeting. I was hooked. Our leader was Julie Barrow, she was the Director of Sales and Marketing and she was all about equal rights and knowing your worth. What????? I have never heard these things in this hotel. These women were so inspiring. We began reading The Confidence Effect by Grace Killelea and that book changed how I saw myself. My confidence was lacking from years of being told I should just stay in the position I was in because it was convenient for that particular person. It opened my eyes to understanding my worth, to knowing what I am capable of. Mostly it shined a light on the fact that I want to be the best role model for my two girls!!!!! The book and the group allowed me to believe in myself and gave me full permission to go after my dreams. I cannot thank these ladies enough for changing my life!!!!
