We had the good fortune of connecting with Heylen An and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heylen, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
One thing that outsiders may not know about photography is how much work actually goes into it. There is so much that happens behind the scenes that people may not take into consideration. Getting ready and preparing for the shoot, photographing, editing, and delivering the images — there are many steps to ensuring a successful photoshoot!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Something that sets me apart from others is that I strive to give all of my clients the best experience possible before, during, and after their photoshoot. When planning my shoots, I treat it as a collaborative effort. I enjoy incorporating my clients’ ideas into their photoshoots because it allows them to be a part of the process. Also, rather than doing the traditional pose and shoot, my photoshoots are a more interactive experience. During my shoots, I ask my clients questions, give them prompts, or play games with them which allows me to capture genuine reactions! With couples, I sometimes ask them to write secret love letters before the photoshoot and have them read the letters to each other during the shoot. I then step back and capture this beautiful moment. I’ve learned a lot of lessons throughout my journey as a photographer but something that will always stick with me is that it is not about the equipment you have or don’t have. It’s about making this a memorable experience for my clients.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people I’d like to shoutout that have believed, inspired, and encouraged me. 1. Family and friends — they allowed me to practice on them when I began my photography journey. 2. My first clients to ever book — they believed in my work when I was just starting out. 3. Lastly, my clients that keep coming back — usually it starts off with a portrait session, then an engagement shoot, then wedding photos, then a maternity shoot, then newborn photos, which then turn into family portraits! Each and every one of these people mentioned are the reason why I am here today 🙂
