We had the good fortune of connecting with Holly Hopkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Holly, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Mod Coffeehouse is more than just a place to pick up a cup of coffee. It’s a place where people come together. Since the founding of our coffeehouse in 2001, Mod has been a staple of the community. We truly care about each of our customers and get to know their names, their kids’ names, their favorite drinks and what their daily routines look like. Students, professionals and all other walks of life come to Mod to study and conduct business- to bond with their friends or to just decompress after a long day. We believe that in order to be a good business we must do good business. That means we act with integrity in everything we do. We feel that our community coffeehouse has a responsibility, now more than ever, to be a place that can offer comfort and normalcy in an uncertain world. We strive to maintain the highest levels of sanitization and cleanliness possible. Our priority is to keep our community safe and connected.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
If someone would have asked me 20yrs ago when I graduated from college with a degree in Human Development and Social Relations, or several years later when I became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, if I saw myself as an entrepreneur / business owner of a coffeehouse I would have wondered what Tarot Cards they were reading! During this time I have learned that there are many, many ways of being of service and seeking to promote goodness in the world. “”God blessed the broken road that lead me straight to you”, Rascal Flatts | This is how I feel, and can best summarize the journey to the beautiful life that I have now. The MOD Coffeehouse, the Galveston community, my soul-shining son and family are the blessings of all that has come before. I thank my lucky stars for the tremendous people who have shared their love and wisdom with me throughout my life, and the moments of grace within which my deepest learning has occurred.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Where to even start? This island is full of wonderful places to eat, drink and explore. From Sea Wall to the Strand, there is so much to discover. The Mod Squad’s favors the locally owned and operated, and there is strong collaboration and support between businesses here on the island. If you’re looking for something sweet to treat yourself to, our neighbors Hey Mikey’s make the finest homemade ice cream you’ll find on the island, and there’s always La King’s Confectionary on Strand! After a long day of walking the beach or shopping around the Strand, DTO is a great place to grab a craft cocktail and unwind on their spacious patio. They are currently offering snacks and food from their neighbor Maceo’s so make sure you come hungry! On the weekends be sure to catch Galveston’s Own Farmer’s Market every Sunday! You can find locally sourced produce, baked goods, roasted coffee and kombucha and meet all kinds of great folk. The market is located at the Bryan Museum and is always a great time. Besides all the great places to eat, drink and shop- the island is also home to some beautiful historical buildings and sites. Check out Bishop’s Palace, the Tall Ship Elissa or St. Joseph’s Church- the oldest wooden church building in Galveston.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This shoutout is dedicated to the MOD Squad, and to the customers who continue to fill our spaces with love and a real sense of community. The team at MOD is comprised of the most incredible people with whom I have ever had the privilege to work. We are baristas, bakers, managers, parents, students, artists, musicians, writers, and community organizers. Our team members create art, pursue their educations, make music, support their families, and seek balance and health in their own lives and broader communities. Their focus every single day is making great coffee, preparing love-filled homemade foods, building a positive and supportive work culture, and creating a warm, welcoming place for all who enter. ♥ It is the MOD Squad and our customers who give MOD it’s heartbeat!
