We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Counter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, how do you think about risk?
I think that all great success involves risk. There is that moment where you have to decide to do it afraid. To do it even though you might not feel ready. To do it without all the knowledge or resources you may need. Your faith and willingness to take risks, has to outweigh all that.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started Counter’s Tutoring Connection because I wanted a place for students to receive individualized academic support. It was important to me, to create an environment for learning that fostered a love for education and instilled confidence in our students. I wanted my values of education as a certified former classroom teacher; and my love for children to be deeply embedded in our foundation and our creed.

I’ve learned so much about myself on this entrepreneurial journey from creating a business from the ground up, to sustaining it for nearly 8 years. One of the things I’ve come to appreciate most is my ability to overcome challenges- surviving the pandemic when so many small businesses did not make it, and then rebuilding our center after the ice-storm flooding nearly 50% of it- those were very hard times. But I think my perseverance and refusal to quit, even in the face of adversity, has been a great example for our students too.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is such an amazing city with some of the most friendly people you’ll ever meet. Our food selection is so vast- you can find any type of food! Mexican is definitely my favorite so for sure we’d have to venture out for some of that. I think Buffalo Bayou Park is really nice too. I love that you can be in the city and still enjoy green spaces. Houston has great outdoor concerts as well. There’s always lots to do in the city and surrounding suburbs.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My daughter, Lauren Aleena, deserves so much credit for believing in me to make some really tough choices and big changes for us both. Her faith in me never wavered and honestly her smile and love are what got me through so many hard days. I looked at her and I knew she was my why…she was my reason to keep striving, to never give up, and to always be hopeful for the future.
