We had the good fortune of connecting with Jess Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jess, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Ever since I can remember I have either been painting, drawing, creating things out of clay or forever redecorating my childhood room (sorry mom lol). My brain has just always been on create mode. After I graduated high school, I studied fashion at the Art Institute, and after a while I realized that wasn’t the avenue for me, so I just decided to start working. I worked first as a personal trainer, then went on to the plastic surgery industry, where I still am today. I fell in love with plastics because to me, this is an art form. I continued to paint and sketch on the side, and a few years ago my best friend was looking for a painting for her dining room and she just couldn’t find anything she likes – So she asked if I would paint something for her. I was honored and terrified, I had painted for my own home décor but never for anyone else. After I finished the piece and hung it for her, I knew this was what I wanted to do. So I began to paint more, mainly for friends and myself. When the pandemic hit I was furloughed so I had a lot of time on my hands – So I began to really ramp up the painting. I explored new techniques and styles and really felt like I honed in on MY style. I have an absolutely amazing support system with my family and husband who is constantly encouraging me to pursue my passions. So many amazing opportunities have already been presented to me in such a short amount of time of being an artist an I cannot wait to see what else the future holds, stay tuned 🙂
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I currently work as a social media specialist in the plastic surgery industry. I have worked in plastic surgery for about 10 years! In this time I have pretty much done it all, from front desk, medical assistant and patient care coordinator. I feel that my extensive experience and knowledge in this industry really sets me apart from the others. When I first started this career path, I knew nothing about plastic surgery! But when I was hired at the first practice I was absolutely fascinated and was a total sponge just absorbing every bit of information I could, I truly believe this is why I have been so successful. In my social media role, I feel that having been so directly involved with patients journey, I know what answers people want and they’re may be too scared to ask the questions, that’s where I come in and can use these social media platforms to make people feel more comfortable!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh goodness where do I even begin!? Houston has an absolutely AMAZING food scene! A whole week huh? Ok lets see – First place to me is a no brainer, Nobie’s is hands down my favorite place to eat here in Houston! The menu is always changing and it’s just the cutest place! Of course we can’t forget about the Tex-Mex, and El Tiempo is my favorite and has some of the best margaritas in town! The Museum district would for sure be on the list, that place alone would take up a couple of days! We would for sure take a bike ride around buffalo bayou too! Last but not least, assuming it’s baseball season – We would 100% go see the Astros!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for my amazing friends, family and husband. My mom has always supported my creativity and is always so proud of anything I do, it’s amazing to have such a great cheerleader in your corner. My friends also have always been so supportive, they are the first ones I created paintings for after all! I love creating things that I know match their personalities, and seeing their faces light up when they see the final product – priceless. I love how art can bring so much joy and happiness. My husband is my greatest support system of all. He is my true partner, he is always there when I need to just vocalize an idea about a painting I want to work on, or need to stage a painting to take a photo – He is always right there with the best angles. These people mean the world to me and I am beyond blessed to have such amazing people in my corner.
