We had the good fortune of connecting with Jocelyn Puente and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jocelyn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I never thought I would be someone who would open up a business, when the thought first popped up in my mind I was at a Bible school and had more than enough time on my hands. I was always very crafty and loved to draw and express myself that way. One day I was just laying down in bed and thought to myself that I could paint on shoes what I draw on paper. That thought stayed in my head and wasn’t sure if it was even possible or where I could start. But I took that leap of faith and began doing research and started my Instagram!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I always loved to express myself through art, I believe what sets my art apart from everyone is that I always just try to portray the love and joy that has been poured out to me! What makes me realize that I am doing something bigger than myself and makes me really proud is when I go out in public and see someone wearing what I have created or they let me know that people come up to them and ask questions and are intrigued by what the design is. It has been a long and tough road to get to where I am, from sleepless nights to being stressed out about not seeing any progress in my business, but even through all of that I stayed consistent and continued to push through. Even when I wouldn’t get orders for weeks and months sometimes I continued to keep pushing out ideas and designs. I’ve learned to not be so hard on myself and allow my creativity to flow without being so worried on how the sales will go, all that truly matters is getting Gods love out there to the people. What I want the world to know about my brand/story is that God will make a way when you feel that you are at the end of the road. Don’t give up, don’t focus on the sales but focus on the impact!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When friends come to visit Houston I make sure to take them to as many places I can! I love eating chicken, if you know me that’s my go to! But would be open to try new things to show them the best time! I would take them to try YoYos hotdogs, they are the absolute best, would definitely take them to Chung Chun, Dish society for brunch, Cuchara, and let them look around to see what else we could check out! To go out I would take them to Post HTX, discovery green and check out Cidercade while we’re on that’s side, I love hanging out with friends and making sure they are enjoying their time here, and if they are in around baseball season make sure to check out an Astros Game!!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First I want to make sure I give all the glory to God for putting this idea in my head and for all the open doors and blessings! I would love to thank my family, specially my parents they have been my #1 supporters and have always cheered me on even though sometimes it was tough and we didn’t know where this could take us. My mom would stay up super late at night to help me with orders and my sisters would take time out of their day to come to my house and help me when I needed an extra hand!
