We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Black and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonathan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Hello customers! I am very excited that you have found my site and products, and I want you to know more about my story.

I am a native Texan who has been fortunate enough to have extensive global traveling experience. As far back as I can remember, my entire life has been saturated in travel and filled with international adventures. Most of these revolve around Europe, and Italy in particular.

I have a home in Tuscany, in the mountains, and if you look at my pictures you will see the beautiful views that I look out upon when I am there. I grew up in this remarkable place, spending childhood summers, and countless years there.

Because of this, Italy shaped me into the man I am today and also played a crucial role in my artistic development, creative ideas, and in my design insight. To this very day, I use the tools that Italy gave me to come up with and create my jewelry.

I buy most of my materials for projects in Tuscany and came up with my initial design concept of using repurposed chandelier crystals in modern jewelry designs there. In fact, the name “luce di Lucca” (meaning “light of Lucca”) came from the city where I thought of my concept for the first time. I now buy vintage jewelry and repurpose them into my jewelry pieces as well as crystals.

I was in the city of Lucca, Italy, at an open air antique market, when I was enthralled by the beauty and availability of all the vintage crystals being sold there. I bought some crystals, as an afterthought, and one day when I was bored, I began to use them to create one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces. Since then, every piece that I design and create reflects the beautiful culture of Tuscany and my love of the country and region.

So, from a small idea, the concept and reality of Luce di Lucca Jewelry was born. In the time since, it went from a vague idea to a real life concept, passion, and business that allows me to create my art for a living. Thank you all for your part in making my dream become a reality!

Sincerely,

Jonathan Black

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My tagline is handmade/vintage/one-of-a-kind. I travel to Italy (Tuscany to be more precise), every summer and go around to the many open air antique markets and I treasure hunt for my jewelry pendants and chandelier crystals to make my handmade jewelry and art pieces. For the Jewelry, I pair each vintage pendant piece (after I clean up the pendants with real pearls in a color that accentuates the piece. With the chandelier crystals, I create hanging art pieces for the home, such has wind chimes, sun catchers, and mobiles.

Starting a business is never easy, and I still have a lot of work to do, but I will say persistence is my biggest asset. I believe in my products and no matter what, I start fresh ever single day and try to sell to the best of my ability.

Some days are good and some are bad, but no matter what happens, each day you start fresh and if you can just move in a positive direction each day, it all adds up and after a time with your nose to the grindstone you can pause and take a look back to admire just how far you have really come.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family has been completely supportive, emotionally and financially, of my business ventures and have gone with me to Europe on my shopping trips as well as helped me sell my products at shows all over the United States.
