We had the good fortune of connecting with JR Holaday-Herrington AKA: “Fizzin Phyllis” and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi JR, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always been a bit of an entrepreneur, starting projects that sell well, working them until they dry up, and then finding the next best thing. I started my current business on a whim one day when my sister said she was watching these incredibly addicting videos by some guy named Aaron… the Midwest Bomb Party King? I clicked on his video and BHAM! I was addicted. The rings were gorgeous. Aaron was so sweet! I knew I wanted to do what he did… but with a twist. Bomb Party King, huh? Well, it was time to introduce a Queen to the game. 🙂 Thus, Fizzin Phyllis… the wild-haired, goat-lovin’, bomb fizzin’ queen of the bling with her best friend Gloria the Goat was born! I created the concepts for the character, media package, Facebook page and groups all over the course of a couple hours late that night.
My biggest desire is to have fun and enjoy what I do. I currently love my regular 8-5, and it lends me a lot of creativity and advocacy opportunities for mental health. But I also have a really deep rooted need to be glittery, extra, sparkly, and the life of the party. What better way than to party down Fizzin Phyllis style? Lights, Camera, Action!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is who I am. RuPaul himself said, “Were all born naked, but the rest is drag!” I am very much so a living creation. Fizzin Phyllis is the star and host of a show I have created on Facebook and soon to be other streaming services everywhere! She is glamour, sass, glitter, and class! She loves color, bling, and laughs at everything. She is truly an entertainment to behold. When she’s not hosting the show, she is spending time practicing self-care relaxing on a beach somewhere! Being that most of my art is a visual personification of an idea, Phyllis isn’t easy. She is not just something you create and put on display never to touch it again.. she is constantly reimagined and reinvented each show for something more and more over the top. Fizzin Phyllis is a new company, and we are experiencing some of our first struggles. The great thing about the business as an art and live show is we can focus our energy into what is appealing to most and draws the best crowd. Phyllis works hard, has a quick wit, and an incredible sense of humor. You won’t find a moment where she’s not enjoying herself. As a business, we’ve leaned into the relationship aspect our what we do. We are not just selling you a product or experience. We want you to become our friend. We want to get to know you and find out all of the most amazing things you bring or our friendship that make it incredible. Come join us for an show with fun, family and friends! 💜
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In my home area, we would definitely go to some amazing places! We have an amazing pasta shop called Victoria’s which was a hole in the wall, but has since become more of a premier restaurant! It’s where I take all friends new to the area. We would certainly go on one of the Art Walk nights so we can go enjoy other forms of art, creativity, wine and music strolling around downtown!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely Aaron & Zachary McGee, The Midwest Bomb Party Kings!
They are so incredibly supportive and passionate about what they do, which helps me also keep my spirits positive and upbeat! Thanks so much boys! Can’t wait to see you in December!
