We had the good fortune of connecting with Karina Puche and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karina, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I think the most important thing I’ve done as a parent is lead by example.

As a single mom and immigrant, my journey hasn’t been easy. I built my business from the ground up while raising my daughter, and through that process I’ve shown her resilience, faith, and work ethic in action—not just in words. She has seen me take risks, work long hours, start over, and keep going even when things felt uncertain.

More than anything, I’ve tried to create a home where she feels safe, loved, and heard. I want her to grow up knowing that her dreams are valid, that she is capable, and that challenges don’t define her—they shape her. If she learns confidence, independence, and compassion from watching me chase my dreams while supporting hers, then I know I’ve done something right.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m the founder of Fusion Sweet, a dessert brand specializing in New York–style cookies and cakes with bold flavors and a modern aesthetic. My signature flavor is pistachio, and I love creating desserts that feel indulgent but also elevated and visually intentional. Being a graphic designer has played a huge role in my brand—I don’t just bake, I design experiences. From the color palette to the packaging to the final details on a cake, everything is thoughtfully curated.

What sets me apart is the fusion behind Fusion Sweet. I combine my Venezuelan roots with classic American baking, and I’m not afraid to experiment with flavors like Dubai Chocolate, pistachio cream, Lotus Biscoff, or layered fillings that surprise you in every bite. My products are generous, rich, and made to feel special—like New York desserts with personality.

My journey hasn’t been easy. I immigrated to the U.S. in 2009, became a single mom, and had to rebuild my life from scratch. There were moments of doubt, financial pressure, and exhaustion. Building a business while raising my daughter required discipline, faith, and resilience. I’ve worked long nights, reinvested every dollar back into my business, and learned through trial and error.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that consistency beats perfection. You don’t need to have everything figured out to start—you just need courage and the willingness to improve every day. I’ve also learned the power of community. Support from clients, word of mouth, and social media have been key to my growth.

What I want the world to know is that Fusion Sweet is more than desserts. It’s a story of reinvention, creativity, and perseverance. It represents a woman who refused to let her circumstances define her. Every cake and every cookie carries a piece of that journey. And if my story inspires another woman, especially another single mom or immigrant, to believe in her dreams, then it’s all worth it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m in Houston, so if my best friend were visiting, I’d make it a full experience—food, culture, and a little bit of glam ✨

Day 1 – Welcome to Houston
We’d start with brunch at The Breakfast Klub—a Houston classic. Then I’d take her to explore The Galleria for some shopping and people-watching. At night, dinner at MAD for a fun, vibrant vibe and great Spanish food.

Day 2 – Arts & Culture
Morning walk at Buffalo Bayou Park with skyline views. Then the Museum District—the Museum of Fine Arts or the Color Factory for something more playful. Dinner in Montrose, maybe at Uchi if we’re feeling fancy. Dessert? Obviously, back home with Fusion Sweet cookies and tea.

Day 3 – Foodie Day
Houston is so diverse, so we’d do a little food tour—authentic tacos, Venezuelan arepas (I have to represent 🇻🇪), and amazing Asian cuisine in Chinatown. At night, drinks at a rooftop like Z on 23 for city views.

Day 4 – Relax & Reset
Spa morning or pool day, then a cute café like Common Bond to talk for hours. Late afternoon at Rice Village for boutique shopping. Casual dinner and wine night at home.

Day 5 – Galveston Getaway
Quick drive to Galveston Beach—ocean air, seafood by the water, slow pace for a day. Nothing fancy, just vibes and good conversation.

Day 6 – Creative & Local
Visit local markets or pop-ups to support small businesses (I love seeing other entrepreneurs thriving). Maybe a content day where we dress up and create cute photos around the city—because memories deserve good lighting.

Day 7 – Sunday Vibes
Brunch, church, gratitude, and reflection. Then a big family-style dinner somewhere warm and lively—Houston has so many hidden gems.

What makes Houston special to me is the diversity. You can taste the world here. You meet entrepreneurs, creatives, immigrants chasing dreams—people building something from nothing. That energy inspires me because it reflects my own story.

For me, the best time isn’t just about places—it’s about connection, good food, and celebrating how far we’ve come.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would dedicate my shoutout first to my daughter.

She may not realize it, but she is my biggest motivation. Every sacrifice, every late night baking, every risk I’ve taken to grow my business has been with her in mind. She gave my dreams a deeper purpose. Because of her, giving up was never an option.

I also want to recognize my mom and my family back in Venezuela. Even from a distance, their love and encouragement have always been my foundation. As immigrants, we carry our families with us in everything we do—their values, their strength, their faith.

And I can’t forget my community and clients. Every order placed, every kind message, every repost and recommendation has helped build Fusion Sweet into what it is today. When you’re a small business owner, especially a single mom, community support means everything.

None of us succeed alone. My story is built on love, resilience, and the people who believed in me—even when I was still figuring it out myself.
