We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Ocanas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, what makes you happy? Why?
Doing what i love on my terms. Thats what brings me pure happiness. At the end of the day i am my own boss, i make all the calls and rules. I enjoy flipping patties and networking with people all weekend. It makes me happy that i can employ my friends and we all kick it together at the events and pop-ups. Ive worked hard to get where we’re at today. Ive put alot of time and effort into this and it brings me joy to see it work so easily.
What should our readers know about your business?
KSWISHs Icehouse is eventually going to be an icehouse, its a bar with cold drinks and usually opens up with garage doors. I’ve always wanted to own a bar/club I knew that for sure. At the moment were a pop-up tent vendor at markets, fleas, really anywhere. Im raising the funds to build up my food truck, which will eventually will fund the icehouse. I’m excited, I’m hustling for my dreams right now. It’s been 3 months of networking, events, and learned lessons. Its not easy, some days get really intense. I never fail to forget something, everyday its something new but we learn from it and fix it. We serve sliders, dawgs, and fries. Its some gas, honestly. Our entire vibe is as H-town as it gets, from the menu to the item names. Thats all i want to go for, i love my city. Ill forever put my city on. I want that experience to be known when people support us, shoutout all the old heads who recognize. I know this is a challenging industry to be in, but that just brings out a drive to go harder in me. Cant wait for you guys to see what we are in the end.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Man there’s so much going on in the city right now, where wouldn’t we go?? Thrifting, arcades, shopping, adventuring and of course a whole lot of eating. So for starters, we’d have to catch breakfast at the breakfast klub and hope there’s no line. Hit up some markets throughout the weekend, shoutout the Montrose market, raxx flea etc. you can get a whole new wardrobe with $100 at these markets, ALWAYS A MUST. During the nights, hit up some bars I’m still learning the spots but id head towards Washington, Montrose, and midtown areas for the nightlife scene. Catch a stros’ game, ride bikes or scooters around downtown. EAT. Id make sure to hit up some of my favorite spots right now, Chick Haus, Houston Barbecue Company, Chef J’s, Big City Wings. We would have to hit up Cidercade for sure, or this new spot called FAO for a drink and games.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my shoutout to my girlfriend, Emily. She has been my right hand man throughout this whole process, she does the early morning rushes to pack up the truck, preps, takes majority of our pictures, manages my social media pages. I call her my manager, she makes sure everything is right when I cant. Were a team and we got something great going. Im so grateful that she cares about this as much as I do, and is willing to help no matter what.
