We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Kinney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“Surround yourself with the things you love discard the rest”. It sounds simple and is probably overused, but this quote is my mantra. If you truly did this you would go through life elated, but it is a wonderful thing to strive for. To me it speaks to imperfection and authenticity. Gather all your favorite things around you and you will be happy. How fun is that!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I believe our homes have the power to transform our emotions, moods, physical health and confidence. After decorating beautiful spaces for over 25 years, I knew I wanted to shift to a business that made a deeper connection between my clients and their homes. With great excitement and passion, I created the Designer’s Couch to provide the key to loving the home from the inside out (including attics, cupboards and closets, where much of our subconscious stress resides). The transition from 100% Interior Design has felt natural and fluid. The reaction has been positive thus far, and I feel as though I have an affirmation as people seem to understand and are ready to make this leap to new thinking and prioritizing. The name is a tongue in cheek reference to the psychology of how we live in our homes. We encourage clients to have more fun, make more efficient choices, and to refresh their homes and lifestyles to reflect their own stories. By living in a space that reflects their authentic selves, and dressing, decorating and entertaining in a way that lifts them up, clients are guaranteed to achieve the beautiful/handsome home and lifestyle they strive for. We start by identifying favorite possessions and rituals the client already has and loves. We then talk about how to highlight and enhance them; next we eliminate or minimize the negatives. We encourage and guide clients to be the person or live the life they dream of, educating them on how to entertain, sleep or eat better, we do repairs and updates, bookcase and tabletop styling, we highlight art, resource bedding, linens, clothing, accessories, table ware and more. Life can be overwhelming, which is why together, we create a plan and then implement it with our team of experts. We are a small, creative personalized business that weaves together a plan that meets the client’s budget and today’s needs, while exceeding expectations with layers of extraordinary options. We believe that by focusing on the client and not only the décor we elevate and invigorate people to live more authentically, adventurously, colorfully and efficiently. The Designer’s Couch can be a Segway into an Interior Design project, or the icing on the cake to complete a design project. We work with designers, realtors and contractors to offer their clientele a total home living experience. We believe it all starts at home…and would love to invite you to have a seat on the couch
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A tour of our diverse neighborhoods. The Water Wall, The Beer Can House, Kuhl-Linscomb, Cheeky Vintage, Brown, Found Home, Backrow Home, The Stone House, Foto Relevance, Dimmit Gallery, Rothko Chapel, The Menil Collection, Cy Twombly, Milk and Cookies, Tiny Boxwoods, Pinkertons BBQ, Truth BBQ, Pondicheri, Hugos, El Tiempo (for fajitas and margs). A walk or biking on the Bayou. For entertainment my favorites are The music box theater and MFAH films.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
YES! Shout out to Tina Davis who is beautiful inside and out. Tina has a heart of gold, she is inspirational, motivational and driven. Tina gave me the encouragement to keep moving forward with The Designer’s Couch, even during Covid. She offered me advice from conception and continues to support me today. Tina owns Cheeky Vintage which is magical, lovely and full of gorgeous treasures. She is having huge success with her own dress designs ( I have 3 ) and continues to evolve, excel and impress!
