We had the good fortune of connecting with Kemian Fry & Jaren Spears and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kemian Fry &, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
One thing that those outside of the step world are probably unaware of is that stepping is still a style of dance and that dance technique is still required. Stepping isn’t as easy as it seems and definitely demands a level of technicality and endurance that many other genres of dance do not.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We have a combined over 25 years of step and dance experience and a passion for teaching people of all ages about the dance genre of step. Because of that passion, The Boss’d Up Step Company was founded in February 2022. We are international award winning performers and coaches and have, in just a short couple of years, become known as an internationally recognized step and dance company.
We provide an award-winning, STEAM based curriculum, The “S.L.A.B” Blueprint – ‘A step-by-step guide on how to step and dance like a boss’ that includes mathematics, multiple genres of dance, and theatrical and artistic expression. We take the idea of ‘moving like a boss’ both figuratively and literally, and apply the principles given through step and dance to our everyday lives in order to be successful both on and off the dance floor.

Right now, we are taking the company through a transition. It’s been an exciting time as we grow and go in a different direction and develop new ways to continue growing the culture and normality of the dance genre of step.
It has definitely not been an easy journey. Unfortunately, even in 2024, the dance genre of step is not still not as reputable as are other genres of dance, therefore step teams are still not valued as actual “teams” but are looked at as school “clubs”, making them un-fundable by a school or school district. This results in the athletes of these step teams being limited in what they’re able to do, or leaving them to personally pay for necessities while having little to no support from their school or school district.

This is why one of Boss’d Up’s initiatives is to show schools and entire school districts why the dance genre of step and step teams alike should be just as valued as all other sports teams on campus. We know and understand the importance of step and step culture, and the impact that it can have on the youth involved. That’s why, with the help of the World of Step League, we are on our way to making step, and step teams alike, just as mainstream as all other genres of dance.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Our favorite spots in Houston would have to align with some of the places where athletes that we train have been able to perform. Places like the Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets, the NASA Johnson Space Center, and the Galleria Mall, just to name a few. Houston is a LARGE city, and whether you’re looking to eat, drink, visit, hang out, or catch a step show or two, Houston is definitely the place where it can all happen.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We’d like to give a shoutout to Bretney Massenburge-Smith & the Soldiers In Christ step team from Tyler, Texas. We both stepped, coached, and choreographed for that team and can accredit our dive into the step world to SIC. Light Squaddd!!!
Also, with Kemian being a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, we would like to give a huge shoutout to ALL of the NPHC (Divine 9) Greek letter organizations, and all Greek letter organizations that have helped pave the way to make stepping what it is today.
