We had the good fortune of connecting with Laine Lyzak and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laine, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Well it started as just a hobby and I would make things for myself and for friends. Eventually people started asking if they could buy customized items and my “hobby” grew to be a money making business and I really enjoyed doing it! When I started crafting, I never thought it would turn into my own business, but I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to see how far I could take this. I realized that if I kept my items unique, people really wanted something that no one else had!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I graduated from CSU Channel Islands in beautiful, sunny, southern California with my bachelors degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. The hard part was that I graduated virtually due to COVID-19. As you all well know, finding a job was extremely difficult during this time. I started crafting as stress reliever and I just enjoyed making cute things for my home. In August I finally found a job testing COVID-19 samples so my boyfriend and I made the leap of faith and moved from California to Texas where the job was located. It was the hardest but best decision we made. Setting up an entirely new craft area was a challenge but once it was up and running there was no stopping me. After about 6 months of being in Texas business was booming and I no longer needed my job in the lab. I then made the decision to leave my lab job and be a full time crafter and part time bartender. My journey was not easy. There were many ups and downs. I messed up A LOT. I’ve thrown away so many messed up pieces but each one of those was a stepping stone for the next mastered piece. Creating a small business is a learning process and I’m still on that learning curve. Everyday I learn new things. The biggest issue I’ve had is having people complain about pricing. I had to learn very quickly that my time and creativity is valuable and that the people that are willing to pay for my creations understand that fact. 4TWO8 Designs is more than just my small business it is my life and it has helped me open my eyes to a creative side that I never thought I had.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shout out to a few people, starting with my wonderful boyfriend Ryan. He’s been with me since day one. He’s seen the good days when I’m doing great as well as the bad days when I feel like I’m ready to quit. He’s supported me in every single aspect of creating and maintaining my small business. The next couple I would like to thank would be my parents, for always believing in me no matter what I decide to do. The last group I would like to thank would be all of my wonderful friends who started to buy things as soon as I started crafting. They never questioned my prices or gave me a hard time, they just wanted to be supportive of me and my business. Awesome friends like mine are hard to find!
