We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Grumbles and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, what matters most to you?
Hands down, Authenticity; and this one applies to both sides of the designer/client relationship. There is so much creativity around us these days thanks to social media that it’s easy for clients to be inspired by a lot of different looks and begin to feel overwhelmed with possibilities. Over the years however, I’ve found that my clients are most happy when their home truly represents them and how they live on a daily basis.  This is something that I feel is a crucial part of my job, helping clients discern and implement their own authentic style.  As for me, being authentic means knowing the environments and relationships that will allow my creativity and experience to thrive, and letting go of those that don’t.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

LGD is a full service design studio, specializing in residential design, new construction and remodeling. I am a licensed designer and bring 17 years of experience to the table. What sets me apart from my peers is that I am a boutique design studio. My goal is to keep my client list short and qualified so that I am able to dedicate ample time to each project and really give them my best.  What I love about this business plan is that it allows me to really develop the relationship with each client and their family, which ultimately allows me to create spaces for them that are highly customized and perfectly suited for their lifestyle.  Because of this approach and the early success of my business, I occasionally have a waitlist for new clients, but ultimately have found that the right clients don’t seem to mind!

If I could offer one helpful piece of advice for someone who is planning to build a new home, I would say don’t wait to hire your Interior Designer.  Bringing your designer on at the very beginning of the project will save you so much time and money in the long run.  When I have the opportunity to get involved while the plans are being developed, I can offer valuable advice and direction on so many key components, from building materials to electrical plans, that will prevent a long list of change orders mid-construction.  Custom homes have literally 1000’s of decisions to be made, and half of them are made before the slab is ever poured!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would love to show off some of the great shops in town that really offer unique finds with exceptional quality. Longoria Collection, AREA, Mecox, Lam Bespoke, Memorial Antiques and Interiors and Back Row Home are just some of my favorite spots to frequent and I always leave with new ideas and inspiration. The Museum of Fine Arts and the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens are definitely important stops to make as well. As much as I love what the city of Houston has to offer, Tomball is my home and has much to offer as well. The Tomball Farmers market on Saturday mornings, lunch at Tejas Chocolate + BBQ and shopping in the Historic District would make for a great afternoon of unique finds and a relaxed local vibe.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I started Lauren Grumbles Design, I had already been working in the industry for almost 15 years and had developed many relationships with industry partners. Several of those peers were quick to support my new business with both new client referrals and business advice. Janie Ellis, formerly of Anything But Plain faux finishes, was one of those key friendships. She was a great source of encouragement and guidance in the months leading up to my “opening” and has continued to be wise counsel as my business has grown. She has actually turned her natural gift for mentoring and experience in the design industry into a business of her own, J. Ellis Consulting. I would highly recommend her to any business owner who is looking for some insight into starting, growing or improving their design business.
