We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Mills and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Passion. My passion for mental health and helping others is the driving factor in my mental health counseling practice. Since I was young, I have had a passion for listening to others, helping them through their struggles and offering insight on how to work through those struggles. My passion for helping others with their mental health is what attracts clients to my counseling practice.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
With mental health therapy, there are so many interventions that therapists use to tailor the session to the client. I love working with others and figuring out what helps them the most. I get excited when we work together and find what helps the client with the situation they are wanting to change. Based off of what clients have shared with me, what sets me apart from some other therapists is that I allow my personality to show in our sessions and can make things relatable. I like to provide a lot of visuals to clients as well since a lot of people are visual learners.
Getting to where I am today was not the easiest road. It was a lot of schooling, a lot of interning, and a lot of motivational self talk to open up my own practice. I leaned on my friends and family for support when I got stressed and kept reminding myself of why I wanted to be a therapist and own my practice.
I have learned that our thoughts control our emotions and behaviors. If you can change your perspective and challenge those negative thoughts, you can overcome a lot!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My loved ones. My friends and family have given me a lot of support and encouragement to go after my dreams to become a mental health therapist. Having their support increased my passion for mental health and my motivation to open up my own therapy practice.
