We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauri Guerrero and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauri, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have always been a creative person. With school projects, and in life. Growing up I constantly painted my room different colors. I went to college for business management, because I always knew I wanted to have my own business. Baking came very natural to me. As my grandmother baked grown up. However I never imagined this would be my career. It started as an outlet to pass time after having a brain surgery. After getting out of the ICU I was told to take it easy. So I started to bake cupcakes and would sit and decorate. I remember I was so proud of my Sesame Street and monkey cupcakes. That evolved into cakes and I began to challenge my self. I started to use fondant and modeling chocolate. I fell in love with the feeling of accomplishment after each cake or simply mastering a new skill or technique. That feeling is what keeps me going. As to why I chose an artistic career? You could say my career chose me, after posting my cakes on social media and making cakes for friends and family. I began getting asked if I could make cakes for birthdays and so on. I learned and got better with each cake I made. It wasn’t until I became active in cake decorating groups that I consider my self a “cake artist”. After seeing some bigger names refer to themselves in that way. I though hey that’s what I am! Cake decorating is truly a skilled art. I realized this wasn’t just a hobby this was my job. So I started a dedicated social media page to showcase my work. And took the steps necessary to have my home bakery. That’s how Ells Sweet Treats came about, and how I came to have my dream job. Where I get to bake delicious things and use my creativity to make beautiful cakes and deserts.

What should our readers know about your business?
I honestly think that what sets me apart is that personal touch. I speak one on one with my customers and make sure every detail is ironed out. I want my customers to be confident in knowing what they are ordering. A cake is the centerpiece of the party. I’m a perfectionist, I will tweak the flowers until the last moment before drop off. I think this has contributed to my success. My customers know that I’m putting my all into there cake and treats. It definitely shows as I have grown from mostly word of mouth. Which is absolutely the best compliment I could receive. I’m most proud of just having my own business. The first in my family to do so, I’m constantly grateful to able to play in the kitchen and call it my job. I have moments where I feel accomplished. When I book a big event or wedding. At the end of the day, I’m like I did it. My biggest challenge would be balance. Being a mom and balancing being a business owner. Wanting to grow your name and brand but also wanting to be there for you child. There’s definitely been times where it seemed impossible, but somehow everything was delivered on time and we still make it to soccer practice. I want people to know that it’s possible! It’s possible to be a mom and a business owner. That it’s possible to do what you love, that it’s possible to be creative and still make an income.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely! Liz Marek and her amazing Sugar geek squad group was an amazing tool for me. The Group was so encouraging and helpful in learning. Liz’s tutorials were a god send! She truly is a pillar in the cake decorating community, along with others. Like siftbykara, krazykoolcakes. My family’s encouragement and support has also been amazing! I for sure wouldn’t be where I am with out them.
