We had the good fortune of connecting with LeeLee Slayyz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LeeLee, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from third ward Houston,Tx. Where my siblings and myself were raised in a very small house by our grandmother. We didn’t have a lot so we were raised to improvise. Being the one with the most sensitive skin and allergies to almost everything, my grandmother’s teachings are what got me here. Learning how ingredients we had in our kitchen, combined with different herbs and essential oils could be used for everyday skin care and overall health. She taught me self sufficiency, just because I didn’t have a lot then doesn’t mean I can’t reach my goals and have more. Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from other artist and entrepreneurs is I love to go outside the box and beyond. I use my face as a canvas and just go for it. When I started doing live tutorials on Facebook is where everything truly got started. I got to express myself and how I’m feeling through teaching others how to apply makeup. The road absolutely wasn’t easy, being a single mother it’s a habit to put yourself last. On top of what life tends to bring, starting a business takes a lot of focus, hard work and dedication. My biggest lesson is remaining consistent, one small break and it’s like starting over. Remembering what motivated me to get started in the first place, was the main thing that pulled me out of negative spaces. Remembering that I’m doing what I love, my passion and what makes me happy. I want the world to know it doesn’t matter what cards you were dealt you can do whatever you want. Set your goals, set your intentions, set your mind. If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ohhh I’m such a home body that loves food so when I do go out Lost and Found Sunday’s brunch is a must! I loooove Lost and Found the atmosphere is almost dope, they never get the food wrong, drinks are fire. Hookahs are everything! Perfect Sunday Funday vibe. For a good savory menu Grace’s is it! Doesn’t matter what day of the week it is, brunch or dinner Grace’s is so good. Even in the mist of the pandemic we all need a good laugh, Improv has done a great job with booking the best talent while keeping everyone safe. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Awww it’s so hard to narrow it down, I’m very grateful to be blessed with a village. My mom Denise who supports me and is my biggest cheerleader. My sister Tonya who keeps me grounded and reminds me of why I got started in the first place. My brother Damian who helped me start my website and took a chance on me. My drag mother Alexyus Paris and my Paris family who have shown me countless support and love. All of my social media friends and family, I’m blessed.
