We had the good fortune of connecting with Lela Hyde and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lela, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always been a candle connoisseur. I guess my candle obsession began when I was a little girl. My mother also scented our home with candles. Fast forward to 2020 When Covid hit I found myself overworked and over stressed. So I began trying new hobbies. There I learned that I liked making candles. It was relaxing and helped me de-stress and the scents they provided a calming relaxing space. I became so immersed in candle making learning about different candles and how harmful certain wax and fragrance oils can be for your health. Creating candles became my go-to self care practice
So I started my own candle company. A candle company that not only provides you with a lasting fragrance but also provides you with a clean burning non-toxic candle.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Hi, I’m Lela and I am the founder of Lela & Hyde Candle Co.
I started my candle company two years ago. and it’s been such a great experience. We believe that buying a candle shouldn’t be an experience that leaves you feeling guilty or second guessing yourself. That’s why we use only the highest quality products.
We’re committed to producing candles that makes your home smell like heaven—without harming the environment or your health in any way.
One of the things I am most proud of is when I sold my first candle to a customer in the United Kingdom! It was such an incredible feeling to know that someone on the other side of the world is using a candle that i created and loving it. Especially when you’re so far away from them It truly reminds me of how special being a small business owner is.
Starting a candle company wasn’t easy. I had to put in a lot of time and effort to get where I am today, but it was worth it because I love what I do and the customers that I meet. I’ve learned a lot of lesson along the way. The biggest lesson that I’ve learned is that you have to do things by yourself sometimes—nobody else can do it for you. This has helped me become more independent and confident in myself as an entrepreneur.
Some tips that have helped me along the way: Don’t let fear hold you back; remember that everyone makes mistakes; don’t compare yourself to others; and don’t get too high or too low during tough times (it happens).
I want the world to know that I’m a chandler and that I love what I do.
I love how each candle is unique, with its own story and personality. Every time I make one, I think about the person who will use it, and what they’ll do with it.
I love thinking about how my candles will smell in their homes—whether they’re in an office or a dorm room or a romantic getaway.
And I love that you can use them as decoration, or as something to keep you company when you’re alone at night.
I hope that when you buy one of my candles, it becomes part of your home
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first place I’m going to recommend is Juillet. It’s a New American restaurant that is absolutely amazing. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is great. Then I would suggest Sawyer Yards. It’s a great place to go shopping and see some of the small businesses that are in town. We could also hangout at Discovery Green Park which has an outdoor space where you can enjoy live music and local events Lastly, to end the night I would go to the rooftop at POST and enjoy the scenic views of downtown Houston and catch up on old times
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to recognize my brother for being a mentor from day one. He has been there for me every step of the way. always encouraging me to pursue my dreams and not giving up on me.
My husband who is super supportive and always encourages my to step outside of my comfort zone. He supports me in every aspect of the company I can’t thank him enough for the love and support he has shown me throughout this journey.
My family and friends there belief in me is a constant reminder that I am on the right path forward.
To the countless number of customers that have supported me in purchasing candles, liking, commenting and reposting my content I can’t say thank you enough to them because without them there wouldn’t be a Lela & Hyde Candle Co.
