Meet Malek Binns: Founder, Celebrity Cake and Cookie Artist, Author, and Influencer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Malek Binns and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Malek, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is exactly like conquering your fears. Taking a risk to achieve a goal requires courage to face the fear of uncertainty. I love taking risks, I am all about faith over fear, I go all in 100 % and don’t always look back. I took a major risk at the start of my business, when I left my corporate job. I analyze all of the pros & cons, and just took a leap of faith. I am grateful that I have done it, because two years later, I have had so many opportunities, (and more still to come) including having a second golden moment with Voyage Magazine!

What should our readers know about your business?
I own a home based bakery called FROSTED by Malek Binns. I specialize in custom handcrafted decorated cakes and cookies. I can cater to any event, from birthdays to weddings, you name it. I am a social media influencer on Instagram with over 12K followers. I am unique because of my talent and also my sugar high personality. I think what set myself apart from others is that I am talented, I love to be creative, I am genuinely hilarious, and I despise ketchup. Honestly and fortunately, I didn’t go through much challenges going in, I was already accustomed to the baking life since I was 13 years old, that everything was expected and I went eased right in without any problems. I won’t say it’s not easy. One of the lessons I learned in my career was that I shouldn’t compare my start to someone else’s middle! We all will get our time especially when it’s deserved. I want the world to know about me is that hard work definitely pays off!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First off, anybody that hang with me knows I love to eat!!! We can definitely hit up any restaurants for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! My favorites are Chilis, BJ’s, Benihana, and even the desserts shops, Marble Slab, Crave Cupcakes, and Sprinkles Cupcakes. I love adventures, so I have a lot of fun in the museum district, that includes the Art Museum, one of the most prestigous landmarks in Houston. I like to have fun as well, so I got to go to the movies or hang out at the bowling alley, Dave and Buster’s and Top Golf. After all that, we are definitely getting something to eat!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people who are or have contributed to my reigning success, but if I have to choose one, it is my mother. My mother is one of the people who have started the spark of an entrepreneur in myself. When I was about six years old, my mother told me two things, “You can be anything you want when you grow up, and whatever you choose to be, be BIGGER than that. I have stuck that piece of knowledge with me throughout my journey. That means so much that I can explore my passion into so many things. I am a jack of all trades because of my mother. I have to thank her for that.
