Meet Maria Delafuente Galindo | Home builder

We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Delafuente Galindo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I come from a proud lineage of business owners. My grandparents owned furniture stores back in the ’70s and ’80s, and some of my fondest childhood memories are of spending summers in those stores, soaking in the energy and excitement of their world.
My first job was working in my dad’s food distribution business, where I got a firsthand look at the hard work and dedication it takes to run a successful operation.
That deep-rooted entrepreneurial spirit has always driven me. My family’s legacy in business continues to inspire and guide me every step of the way.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Sassafras Construction, we like to think of ourselves as a boutique construction company—small enough to give every client our full attention, and experienced enough to deliver exceptional results. We’re deeply detail-oriented and committed to understanding each client’s unique needs.
A home is often the most important purchase a person makes, and we take pride in making each one just right for the families who live there.
We began as a spec home builder, but quickly saw the growing demand for a trustworthy, hands-on contractor. People appreciated our work and continued to return to us for their remodeling projects. That trust means everything to us.
Construction is rarely a straight path—it comes with twists and turns. But in the end, the results are always worth it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is such a fun and vibrant city! One of my favorite things to do here is catch an Astros game—it’s always a great time. A quick day trip to Galveston is another favorite; there’s something about the ocean air that just lifts your spirit. And don’t get me started on the food—our culinary scene is among the best in the country. Honestly, we’re spoiled in Houston. Every time I travel elsewhere in the U.S., I realize nothing quite compares to the flavors of our city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to two incredible women in my life—my mom and my paternal grandmother.
My mom is the one who taught me the true meaning of dedication and discipline. Her strength and determination shaped the foundation of who I am today.
My grandmother, Aby, was my greatest sales mentor. She taught me how to truly listen to clients, understand their needs, and find a way to make it happen.
I carry their lessons with me every day, and I’m endlessly grateful for their wisdom, love, and example.
