We had the good fortune of connecting with Minister Adams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Minister, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I opened Our Little Red One Shop to offer my community alternative options for healing. The areas where my stores are located are typically under-resourced, high-crime, high-stress, and impoverished. I established Our Little Red One Shop to provide a community resource where people can come to feel heard, acknowledged, and receive help in their healing journey.

The Third Ward and Sunnyside areas had no natural or health-food stores within a 5-mile radius when I first started, and this motivated me to bring organic and holistic alternatives to these neighborhoods. I aimed to create a reliable source of alternative lifestyle choices and healing techniques. We provide services that focus on spiritual healing and naturopathic wellness solutions to help people attain optimal health and well-being to contribute to their overall happiness.

What should our readers know about your business?
Our Little Red One Shop is a dedicated Hoodoo shop focused on providing healing products and services for our community. We take pride in offering a wide array of herbs and tea blends, all carefully selected for their natural remedies and wellness benefits. Our mission is to support and uplift every individual who walks through our doors, ensuring that they find the love and care they deserve on their healing journey.

Since opening six years ago, Our Little Red One Shop has become a cherished establishment in the Third Ward neighborhood. This success has allowed us to grow rapidly, making us a go-to destination not just for locals but also for visitors to Houston. As a result of our expansion, we launched a second location in the Sunnyside neighborhood over two years ago, further impacting the community by providing a welcoming space for those seeking similar healing services.

I have a deep commitment to my community and firmly believe that everyone should experience life at a high frequency filled with positive energy. It’s essential for people to realize that there is so much more out there than the cycle of challenges they may be accustomed to. Growing up in these neighborhoods has given me firsthand insight into the obstacles people face, and although it can often feel overwhelming to see beyond them, I want my community to know that there are caring individuals who are eager to help them succeed.

Owning Our Little Red One Shop has been an incredible journey. I created this space with the hope of fostering a positive environment that encourages striving for better opportunities. What brings me the greatest joy is witnessing the vendors I support flourish. I aim to provide them with their first chance to showcase their products in a brick-and-mortar store, offering them a platform to gain visibility and grow their experience.

My aspirations extend beyond mere business; I seek to mentor those who come after me and serve as a guiding example. It’s about sharing knowledge, resources, and encouragement while helping them navigate the everyday challenges they encounter.

In essence, my mission is straightforward: to cultivate a sense of community and empowerment, demonstrating that together, we can create opportunities and overcome adversity.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you were visiting Houston, I would suggest you to go visit the Heart of Houston, Third Ward. Right down the street from our original location on Emancipation Ave, you’ll find Savoy, a lounge and restaurant known for some of the best lamb sliders around. Just across the street is The Spot, an old school hole-in-the-wall night lounge that has its own charm. On weekends, you can see people out and about with their slab cars bumping music, and partying up and down the street.

If you’re in the mood for pizza, Meek’s Pizza offers delicious vegan options that are definitely worth trying. For those who enjoy reading, Kendrick’s Bookstore is a fantastic black-owned bookstore in the area with a great collection. And you can’t forget about Frenchy’s, famous for having the best fried chicken in town. Lastly, the Shape Center hosts various cultural community events, making it a vibrant part of the neighborhood. There’s always something happening in Third Ward, making it a great place to explore!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A heartfelt shoutout to our ancestor La Vita Ru for having the courage to establish a spiritual shop in the heart of Third Ward, creating a safe haven in a community that doesn’t always feel safe. Your commitment to nurturing and healing has left a lasting legacy that resonates within us all.

I am honored to carry forward the mission, ensuring it continues to provide for and uplift our community with love and care.

You were not only a remarkable artist but also a true advocate for the community. Your spirit will always have a cherished place in our hearts.

Love, Minister Adams (Auntie)
