We had the good fortune of connecting with Naomi Dawson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Naomi, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Originally and quality. My brand has created a following of its own solely based of taste and presentation. Using quality ingredients has not taking shortcuts when creating new flavors has brought me lots of success.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I do my best work when a client gives me creative control to create not only a delicious bake for their event, but a statement piece that instantly elevates the spaces aesthetic. My designs range from groovy and fun, to elegant and uniformity. I take pride in all designs that leave my kitchen because most are designs I will never create again, giving the client absolute and complete originality and quality. Another thing that sets me apart in my area is the flavors. Lots of bakeries and bakers use store bought mixes and other things with their bakes. However I bake all of my cakes and macarons from scratch. Giving the client the ultimate cake experience from design, to taste. I started my business when I had just become a young, new mom. It was a challenge learning how to be a mother, finding myself after having a baby, creating, and running a business. It was not easy in the slightest. Many late nights or all nighters of tears, laughs over the phone with my baking friend (Kimbe Breitenstein), lost money, lost friendships, new friendships, new business connections, missing out on events or family time. What I’ve learned the most is you can’t have it all, but with balance, drive, and a good business plan you can get pretty close.
I want the world to know that if you love something enough anything can happen. I tell people all of the time that all of my bakes and designs are inspired by love. However they take that, what I mean is my love for creating. And when your baker loves what she does, you’re guaranteed a lovely bake.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely bring them to one of my favorite coffee shops University Coffee or Java Jacks. I often have business and casual meetings there. And you can’t come to Nacogdoches without stopping my the Fredonia Brewery and drinking some of the best craft beer in Texas! Many don’t know, but you can get some of the best Asian fusion cuisine here in Nacogdoches from a food truck, Rice Queen Street Food! The Owner & Creator Janae Obsorn is so sweet and she puts her heart into feeding our community new and quality dishes!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I started this operation solely because I needed a creative outlet and I had a love for quality baking. But I have to credit my good friend and Cookie Artist, Kimbe Breitenstein, for giving me the advice and courage to turn my creative baking skills into a successful business after she had done the same. As for mentorship, I have yet to find a seasoned artist/mentor in my area to turn to when I need guidance but I am looking! With art you only get better.
