Meet Nehemiah Brooks | Performer (Actor, Dancer, SInger)

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nehemiah Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nehemiah, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success, plain and simple, is God. I truly couldn’t do anything without Him—the lessons, the people, the talents, the knowledge—everything He’s brought into my life. I deeply appreciate all He’s shown me and how He’s helped me grow. Without God, I could only go so far. Without His love, grace, and strength, I wouldn’t have made it this far. Honestly, I would’ve given up a long time ago.
It’s because of His love that I’m able to keep going even in misery. It’s because of His love that I can smile in the face of despair. It’s because of His love that I can find joy in an unfair world.
By far, I am not in the most ideal position to be a performer. I’m a lot less financially stable than many of my peers and can’t afford regular classes. But I’ve witnessed the miracles He’s worked in my life—like the time He made it possible for me to go to Japan, even when I could barely afford food. Haha.
Knowing He gave me the greatest love of all time—sacrificing Himself, suffering for me, and dying for me—fills my life with so much meaning and hope. I know that through Christ, all things are possible. I also understand that His plan often looks very different from what we expect, but it’s always for the best.
He’s taught me deep humility, kindness, and gratitude through the people He’s placed in my life—and sometimes through the people He’s removed from it. That part was painful, but it ultimately made me so much stronger and better.
He’s shown me what greatness and passion truly look like. How to be a performer with influence and purpose. He’s given me role models like Michael Jackson, showing how you can live to serve others, help heal the world, and still honor Him.
Most importantly, He’s taught me forgiveness—and how to forgive. He’s shown me that even as sinners, we’re still loved. He continues to chase after us, even when we drift away. It’s never too late for anyone to return to Him.
God is the root and answer to everything. I continue to struggle and succeed. I fall, but I get back up. Every bit of success I’ve experienced is because of Him. Every person I’ve met, every connection I’ve made, every show I’ve done, every meet-and-greet—it’s all thanks to God and my ongoing journey of building a relationship with Him.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Hello, I’m Nehemiah Brooks, I also go by Neo, and I’m a performer based in the Houston area—mainly up north near Spring and The Woodlands. I primarily do live theatre. So far, I’ve performed in four musicals: The SpongeBob Musical, Hello, Dolly!, Into the Woods, and The Little Mermaid. I’ve also acted in four straight plays: White, The Play That Goes Wrong, The Sleeper, and The Thanksgiving Play. Outside of theatre, I’m also a dancer—mostly freestyling and doing covers of Michael Jackson songs—and I do content creation and video editing on the side.
What sets me apart from others is my aura and authenticity. Truly, no one can or will be Neo. When I enter a space, I bring a presence of sheer realness that only I know how to channel. My goal is always to make sure you remember me and feel something the moment I step onto a stage or set. I’m good at catching attention—and keeping it. I say that humbly, though, because it’s only possible through God and the work I’ve put in. I still have so much to learn, and I know I’m far from the top—but I’m climbing. Along with that, I’d also just say my flexibility to work with. I always try to make things as enjoyable and easy as possible for another person. I’m easy to collab with and am always all ears for any new ideas
That said, I’m incredibly excited to keep growing as a performer. I’m especially proud of how much my physicality has improved. I’ve learned how to use my body in more precise and intentional ways to really sell a character. My role as Flotsam in The Little Mermaid with Class Act Productions really showed me how far I’ve come in that area. I’m still striving to be more authentic and truthful in my acting, and I believe that once I fully master that, I’ll reach a level I can’t even imagine yet.
Getting to where I am now has been a major journey—and a leap of faith with God. It hasn’t been easy. In fact, it’s been very challenging. I still consider myself a beginner; I only started acting and singing about a year ago. I’ve been dancing for most of my life, but singing and acting are still relatively new to me. I’ve never had formal singing or dance training—mostly because I couldn’t afford it. The only reason I was able to take acting classes is because I received a full-ride scholarship. I’ve leaned on the support of so many people to be able to do what I do, and I hope one day I can pay it forward.
Along the way, I’ve experienced a lot of loss—within my family, in relationships, and sometimes even within myself. But God has always been there to lift me back up and help me keep moving forward. I truly believe that when you humble yourself before Him, repent, ask to receive Him, and make the effort to build a relationship with Him, life starts to open up in unexpected and beautiful ways. When you actually take care of your crops, the fruit begins to show—and it’s the same with Christ. His plan may not always look like what we expect, but it’s always greater. I trust Him, and I trust He’ll take me where I need to go.
If there’s one thing I want the world to know about me, it’s that I just want to be authentic and love out loud. I want to create joy and entertainment for others. I want to be a beacon of light that reflects God’s love. I want to help heal the world in the best way I know how. I still have dreams—of being a voice actor, of finding the love of my life, traveling the world, going back to Japan again, most importantly, meeting people and hearing how I’ve impacted their lives for the better.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So truly I say this with a full chest. GO TO CENTRAL HOUSTON! Mainly, where I live, there’s not a ton to do. If you like shopping, then I absolutely recommend coming over to the Woodlands area. They have a beautiful mall, restaurants, and a wonderul shopping district. It’s also really nice for just walking around in general. But if you actually want events & things to do, you definitely have to go more into central Houston. Houston is a vibrant hub for fine arts lovers, the city offers an incredible range of experiences across theatre, music, and visual arts. If you love music, you can catch a world-class performance at the Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, or Houston Symphony, all located in the Theater District—one of the largest in the U.S.
For my Theatre fans out there, Houston has many theatres, including the Alley Theatre and Stages deliver compelling productions year-round, from classics to bold new works. Also, Theatre Under The Stars and The Hobby Center if you’re really into the Musical Theatre scene (Along with various community theatres). Art lovers can explore the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, which houses over 70,000 works spanning centuries, or stroll through the dynamic installations at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Meow Wolf and Color Factory are also very cool immersive arts and entertainment attractions. You can get some really neat photos and see some awesome & trippy immersive art. There’s also some nice music venues like Miller Outdoor Theatre and White Oak Music Hall host everything from jazz to indie concerts. House of Blues is also a really cool one! But yeah those are some of my personal favorite fine art spots. If you’re into Anime or cosplay, Houston also has various Anime & comic conventions (A lot happening in the George R. Brown Convention Center)
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Most importantly, first and foremost, I dedicate this shoutout to the King of Kings, Lord of Lords himself, God! Thank you for sending your one and only son to die for our sins and allowing us a relationship with you through free will. Second, would be my parents both blood and step-families. Yall gave exceptional support and forever am grateful for you helping make me into the person I am today! Last, Just thank you to my teachers and the real ones! I’m Thankful for genuinely helping me grow in my path as a performer and life. I truly mean the ones who really cared and supported me and my well-being. Bonus shoutout to Michael Jackson for just being overall a huge part of my journey for wanting to be a performer
