We had the good fortune of connecting with Perla Lara and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Perla, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
As a mom of four with one on the way, the most important thing I’ve done is to model kindness and empathy. Teaching my girls to respect others, help those in need, and understand different perspectives has a lasting impact. I encourage open conversations about values and the importance of being themselves and responsible citizens. This foundation helps them grow into compassionate individuals who care about their community and the world around them.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a crochet entrepreneur, my business focuses on creating unique, handmade pieces that blend traditional techniques with modern designs. What sets me apart is my commitment to sustainability; I use eco-friendly materials and prioritize ethical sourcing. I’m most proud of the community I’ve built around my small business, where customers feel connected to the stories behind each piece.

My journey began as a hobby, but as I shared my work online, I realized there was a demand for personalized crochet items. It wasn’t easy—balancing creativity with the business side was challenging. I overcame these hurdles by balancing motherhood and my small business Creations by K1, learning to read patterns, and continuously learning about marketing and customer engagement.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of resilience; setbacks are part of the process, and each one has taught me something valuable. I want the world to know that my small business is not just about products; it’s about fostering creativity, community, and a love for handmade artistry. Every piece I create carries a part of my story, and I hope it resonates with others as much as it does with me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting Pearland and Houston for a week, I’d plan an exciting itinerary to showcase the best of the area Pearland Town Center for some shopping and dining hub. Next Shadow Creek Ranch Nature Trail a scenic walking and biking trails. Then Pearland Recreation Center for some family-friendly activities and sports. In Houston where i lived for over 20 plus years, first we will hit the Houston Museum District the home to multiple museums, including the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. The next day to Space Center Houston for some educational and fun atmosphere. Then Hermann Park a beautiful park with a garden. Later that week to The Houston Zoo where I have gone countless times over the years. Then the Theatre District to catch a show or performance. Chinatown to explore diverse dining options and cultural experiences. And lastly to The Menil Collection a unique art museum with a serene atmosphere.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my husband and children, who have been my steadfast support system. Their love and encouragement have played a crucial role in my journey. Lastly, a shoutout to the little girl in me who deserved the world, and to my daughters, who inspire me to work hard for everything I do. Thank you all for being a part of my story!
