We had the good fortune of connecting with Phylicia French and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Phylicia, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson my business has taught me is to trust my creativity, intuition, and vision. When I first started my coaching business, I needed validation from family and friends to move forward on ideas or concepts. I was not confident in making decisions and that hindered the growth of my business. The lack of confidence and anxiety made me realize I needed to navigate the emotional barriers standing in my way. Before I wrote my book, Sis, You Are the Universe. I went to therapy, discovered my worth, tackled imposter syndrome, and began to trust myself. This allowed me to stand in my power as an entrepreneur. I realized it is perfectly okay to get advice and consult with others before making decisions. However, you have to believe in your vision and be authentic to yourself. Trust your abilities and vision!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My book, Sis, You Are the Universe, includes words of encouragement, healing, and love for black women, and expands beyond traditional affirmations. This book was created to be a warm sister hug for black women all around the world. Sis, You Are the Universe empowers black women to reimagine the toxic strong black woman narrative, explores what it means to be a black woman owning your magic, power and truly accepting your value and your worth, navigating societal perceptions of black women, how to celebrate yourself, how to heal, step-by-step guidance on emotional control and self-love, and increasing self-awareness. Sis, You Are the Universe contains pithy and powerful insights which makes it an easy read. The second part of my book engulfs readers in love, advice, empowering poetry, and affirmations by 58 black women from different generations. Sis, You Are the Universe connects readers to their internal magical force and provides a community of love. This book is a light that is much needed for my community. I get excited when readers tell me how empowered they feel when they read my book. I love that I get to inspire readers to step into their power!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many amazing restaurants to visit in Houston. Go to the Traveler’s Table, Mikki’s Soulfood Cafe, the Breakfast Klub, KISS Houston brunch, and Mastro’s Steakhouse. If the weather is nice, go to Discovery Green, rent electric scooters and ride downtown, and go on a picnic at Hines Waterwall Park. Go to iPic movie theater, NASA Space Center, K1 Speed, the Downtown Aquarium, Painting with a Twist, Main Event, and Katy Vibes for indoor fun.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my mom, Phyllis French, sisters Nikki Green and Whitney French, and brother Darrell Kitchen-Oliver. My family is extremely supportive and played a vital role in shaping who I am today! They listen to all my ideas, provide feedback, pick me up when I sometimes don’t have the strength to do so myself, show up to every in-person or virtual event, and make sure I am well. I am forever thankful for my family’s constant love and support.

I would also like to dedicate my shoutout to my mentor and friend, Erin Wehrenberg. Erin is an extraordinary life coach and self-published author of Soften (a book that changed my life). The guidance she provided was instrumental in building my confidence to launch my coaching business and self-publish my book, Sis, You Are the Universe. She showed me the importance of playing by my own rules and finding a process that feels authentic to who I am. Additionally, she shared her entire self-publishing process and supported me on my journey to publish my book. I am extremely thankful to have her as my mentor.
