We had the good fortune of connecting with Rae Burnett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rae, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have been a creative for as long as I could remember. It’s always been a sort of therapy/stress relief— but it wasn’t until I was a full grown adult when I realized that you could make a career or if it! I quit my corporate job in 2021 and haven’t looked back. The journey has been rough, but it’s so rewarding to watch your skills developed and bring joy to those that love art

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
GoddessxRae Art brings representation to the alternative black culture. I’m here for the emo black kids that were made fun of by their own peers. The start was so rocky! I had no idea what I was doing. Luckily, I’ve been able to collaborate with some amazing artists that helped me create the best structure for my business. Now, I get to create cartoons for entertainers, album covers for artists, logos for businesses and so much more. The hardest part was starting new projects. I was always worried that my client wouldn’t like it or that it wouldn’t match my mind’s eye, but I adapted Nike’s motto and started just doing it.
Now, there’s really no limits to what I can do right now and I love it!

Two things I need everyone to know about my business is that I’m here to stay and this is only the beginning. I’m manifesting a Netflix or Cartoon Network (Adult Swim) deal, so you guys send me some good vibes. Let’s make this happen! Lol

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Favorite spots in the city…hmmm— well everyone that knows me knows I’m also a stand up comedian and a part time poet lol, so! I would let her choose where we eat. Most, if not all of my friends are foodies, so I know she’d already have some places saved. As far as things to do, I would first take her to see my girl Free K at the Local Seat on Monday, so we can watch some local rappers, singers, poets and comedians do their thing!
On Tuesday we’d hit Tuesday Takeover at Swagger with my guy Leroy tha Third. Definitely the place to crack up and get responsibly tipsy.
On Wednesday, we’d probably go to a karaoke spot, but we’re definitely hitting my Paint & Sip Therapy class at Color Me Mine in the Heights on Thursday. It’s a pottery painting studio that’s BYOB and food friendly. Honestly, it’s my favorite hang out spot, plus I’m the manager, so I get discounts lol.
On Friday, we’re going to We Go Live so she can see how Courtney Lynn and Scott Free put the “pro” in production!

There’s so many more options like Puff Puff Poetry, I believe my girl Free K has another event during the week, RoRo with Bellard Entertainment Co is always hosting something. You can literally find something to do everyday of the week. If anyone is still wondering, honey, Houston is lit and we have an amazing night life. But don’t move here— we’re at capacity, lol.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my son and my mother! My mom has always pushed me to follow my dreams and she still encourages me when I feel like giving up. My son is only four, but the personality on that little guy just brightens my day and he’s really become my motivation
