We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruben Alonso and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ruben, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always been in business, since I was a kid, my dad was always in business. He came from Mexico with a 3rd grade education but he was always hustling, we sold avocados, cookware, street corn, snow comes all kinds of stuff. So I guess I caught the bug at an early age.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
One Sunday afternoon I was sitting on the couch watching football and eating Cheetos. Then this bible verse came to my mind Proverbs 6:1-7, it talks about paying what you owe and not resting till it’s paid with life and death intensity. As I considered the verse and my situation at the time I was not living it out. I had debt and I was “sitting on the couch eating Cheetos”. In that moment I quickly considered what I could do now, like right now to address my situation. The first thing that came to mind was cutting grass since we had a little mower, little weedeater and a little blower. I say little because they were not suited for business, but that was what we had and our Honda Odyssey. So I yelled to my oldest son “Ru, let’s go cut some yards!” he was confused and Interrupted to say the least. That day we knocked on doors and mowed three lawns, then the gears really started turning. When we returned home and considered what we did, we ran the numbers looked at possibilities and we felt hope bubbling up inside of us. What would we call ourselves and thank God “Alawnso Services” was born. We started with what we had and that was enough just residential tools that gave us fits and our family mini-van. As we worked and saved we upgraded one piece of equipment at a time. That was August 2019, by the grace and provision of God we now have two trucks two trailers, all commercial grade equipment and a year round business. God has brought us a long way in a short time. Lawn Painting has been a Godsend, since mowing is seasonal, business usually plummets during the fall and winter. We believe God allowed this market to find us because He knew we wouldn’t “miss the boat”. Lawn painting has brought us so much exposure and opportunity. We are leading and creating this new market. Thank God we are also helping other entrepreneurs get into the business, with training and by becoming a distributor for our grass paint manufacturer Geoponics Endurant. This is an awesome venture that has the potential to change many lives and businesses. It has not been easy, but with God’s blessings my wife’s support and the hard work of my partner and son Ru we are breaking new ground everyday.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would definitely be eating at “Taste of Texas”, taking a graffiti tour and maybe catching an Astros game in downtown, after church of course lol. We could also go to the Woodlands waterway for food and shopping.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh wow definitely! So people wise like I mentioned previously, growing up with my Dad’s example was huge. However I believe that my greatest value and encouragement has been from a book I read. My life was transformed when I met Jesus Christ and started studying the Bible. I was a 9th grade dropout running the streets and lost until God found me through the church, my wife and children.
