We had the good fortune of connecting with Sade Champagne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sade, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
For me, I consider myself to be a “smart and resourceful risk taker”. I personally don’t believe that I have to risk it all in order to live my dreams. I know many artists, performers, creatives and entrepreneurs have been known to put everything on the line for their goals, but I always thought it was important to make sure my basic necessities were met as I was pursuing my dreams. I only take risks if it’s something I can afford to lose and/or I already know the probability of me winning is extremely high. Even now I still have multiple streams of income and don’t just depend on my dreams to be my main source of income. It’s important to look at life and your career/dreams from the long haul and not just right now. That helps in decision making.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
This month (June 2021) marks 16 years since I graduated from high school and started pursuing my dreams and career full-time. I always knew since I was a little girl that I would be walking in what I am today, but I didn’t know how or when. I am so thankful for the Grace of God, mentors and the power of a supportive community that have all helped me to be who and where I am today. It takes a village! I am most proud of staying true to myself and doing things my way (even though it has taken me much longer) in an industry that is known for sucking the life out of artists and creatives. I never wanted to compromise my morals or sell my soul for external success. Internal success means more to me than anything on the outside. Even though I don’t come from much (according to American standards), I am proud to have countless career credits to my name and been able to see and do some pretty cool things! Here are some highlights: I have created, directed, and executive produced multiple popular tours and over 350 events. My performances and events have been attended by more than 60,000 people, and I have shared the stage with legendary entertainers such as Jill Scott, Chris Tucker, Keke Palmer, Chloe & Halle and countless others. Through my international digital radio shows I have covered red carpet events starring Terry Crews, Angela Bassett, Matthew McConaughey, Ashton Kutcher, Ray J, SWV, Dennis Rodman (etc.) and interviewed numerous celebrities including Ledisi, Luenell, Tom Bilyeu, Derrick Jaxn, Evan Carmichael and more. I created, executive produced and released an original spoken word album titled “In Between the Dream”, original music and directed short films and music videos. In 2019 I cofounded the I Am Extraordinary Academy in Ventura and created, directed, wrote, executive produced, choreographed and starred in my first live stage production titled “My Christmas Miracle” with Two Trees Community Church in Ventura. In 2020, me and my best friend J.A. Watkins created the well-received radio podcast “Matters of the Heart” that led to us creating, directing, co-hosting and executive producing our first ever TV Show “Matters of the Heart” on The OnPoint Channel & Network. Our TV show just won “Best Talk Show” at the 2021 OPN Awards! Through my teaching and speaking, I have mentored and led workshops for thousands of children, teens and adults at schools, colleges, churches, businesses, etc. I am a mental health and suicide prevention advocate and spokesperson for several nonprofit organizations around the world. I am a board member for the Juneteenth Celebration of Ventura County. I have over 20 years of experience in ministry, leadership and community service and am a certified Professional Sexual Abuse Counselor, certified Professional Body Therapist Counselor and Certified Professional Body Healing Coach. I self-published and released my first book “Grace Made: My Journey to Love, Joy & Healing” on Amazon earlier this year.
It has not been easy, and nothing in my life has happened over night. Pretty much everything in my life has been slow and takes a long time! My faith, mentors and having a tight knit support system has carried me through. It’s so imperative that we don’t compare ourselves (or our journeys) to others, and that we are kind to ourselves. Also it’s important to be persistent and consistent in your passions- if you’re going in the right direction, stay the course. I have the determination and tenacity of a weed!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s actually one of my dreams to visit and go on tour in Houston one day in the near future! I have many friends and supporters there, and I hear wonderful things about the city! I’d love to eat good food, check out the beautiful sites, go to a concert or event and just have a great time!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well my first shoutout always goes to my greatest inspiration and biggest motivation/role model- GOD! I am who I am today and where I am because of the Grace of God. God has loved me (and continues to) into wholeness, healing, confidence and peace. My second shoutout will go to one of my longtime mentors and inspirations Lyndia Lipscomb. She taught me how to be resourceful, to be multifaceted, the power of being myself and so much more. She is one of the most encouraging and supportive people I’ve ever met and been blessed to know in any industry.
