We had the good fortune of connecting with Sehaam Ahmed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sehaam, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Our passion for making jewelry started out as a shared hobby several years ago. We always played around with the idea of turning this hobby into a business, but never took concrete steps until April of 2020. With the world going into lockdown, we decided it was now or never. We took the plunge, hired a website designer, and got to work. In August of 2020 our website went live and Our Tesoro Custom Jewelry was born.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We take pride in the fact that we are a small business that is not only female owned, but POC owned as well. In case you didn’t know, we are also a mother and daughter duo. Our family is originally from Pakistan and we pull a lot of inspiration from our culture. Chunky and bold jewelry is worn often during wedding and cultural festivities. The evil eye is also a large part of our culture and we feature it on many of our jewelry pieces.
We also take a lot of pride in the quality of our jewelry. For example, all of our beaded jewelry is made by hand. Every piece of jewelry that is ordered is assembled individually with hand selected semi-precious stones and/or freshwater pearls. We make sure all of our chain jewelry is plated on sterling silver chain. These steps may seem tedious to some, but the quality of our jewelry is a non-negotiable for us. As we continue to grow, we will continue to take all the steps necessary to maintain quality.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are huge foodies, so of course restaurants and dining will be our main focus when taking anyone around the city. Oysters and drinks at Eunice are always a must before a night out. Whenever someone hasn’t visited Houston before, we also make sure to plan a day to have lunch in Chinatown and hop from place to place in order to sample each type of cuisine.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We could not have launched our business without the unwavering support of our friends and family. When we first started, we relied heavily on word of mouth and without hesitation, all the people we gifted our jewelry to over the years became our biggest promoters. It is so important to have a network of people who support your business endeavors and enjoy seeing you succeed.
