We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelby Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shelby, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had just quit my 9-5 job, which had put me through quite a depressive episode. I was working long hours, as well as taking 3 college classes. I finally couldn’t do both any longer so I decided to focus primarily on my schooling. I have always had a passion for animals, but veterinary schooling is a very long and expensive process. So I found a way to pursue my passion with animals still and be able to have a balanced work life and still be able to do my online classes.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business sets me apart from others because of the amount of time and dedication I put to my client’s pets. I go above and beyond to make sure my clients and their pets are comfortable and well cared for. My business first sparked whenever my first client, Kimberly Adkins, was looking for someone to watch her German Shepherd puppy, Max, when she returned back to work. I fell in love with Max and getting to be around pups every day, so one client turned into two, two turned to five, and so on and so fourth. Today, I get the pleasure of visiting 5 different clients homes daily to my care for their fur babies while they work, and countless different clients over the weekends. In no way has starting a business from the ground up been easy. Every day I’m still learning the ins and outs and I still make mistakes constantly and it has been the greatest learning experience for me. If the college kid can build a business from the ground up, you can accomplish your goals as well. The only person stopping you from being successful is you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For breakfast or brunch i would have to go to Snooze, Toasted Yolk, Tout Suite, the breakfast Klub and Toaster’s Cafe
Some of my favorite things to do around Houston are Seismique, going thrifting at Retopolis, I love both Museum of fine arts and the Science museum, and a trip down to the Galveston Strand to shop is always a fun time!
Some of my favorite night time options are hamburger Mary’s- it’s a fun environment for a girls night out! The rustic is also a great place to listen to live music.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My support system is the only reason I am where I am at today. My family has been my backbone and had pushed me to succeed even when it feels like success is light years away. I am so appreciative of my dad for always inspiring me to always do my best and to always keep grinding, even on my hardest days. My father is a senior captain for Houston Fire Department, and a EMT at North-channel EMS. He took up working a second part time job to make sure I would graduate with my Bachelors in Business administration debt free. I am extremely grateful for all of his sacrifices.
