We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelia Moore-Piper and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shelia, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
One of my favorite quotes is: ” Success is not a destination, it’s a journey”! I was told that years ago and it stuck! The music industry is not a one size’s fits all. I have to find my niche and do what works for me! You never arrive either. You are always having to re-invent your self because, what may have worked 5 years ago, may not work today so you gotta stay on the lookout. The music industry constantly evolves so when it does, you have to change also but, stay true to who you are!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am called to be different. No one is cloned! Even though there are many artists out there, I believe what sets me apart is the music that I do. I am a Christian Soul Artist. When I first started, I listened to many people about what I should be wearing etc. as an artist, I tried to pattern myself after them to fit it. However; I realized I have to be myself and dress accordingly to the music God called me to do and I wasn’t called to be like everybody else. God reminded me that since my sound was unique, I was also unique and unique people don’t copy others. We are to be ourselves! That’s what sets us apart from others! Again, ” Success is not a destination, it’s a journey”! So you have to grow in the artistry world. No one starts off at the top. We all start at the bottom and work our way up. I told my Grammy U mentee, in this business, learn to ascend like an airplane. The pilot doesn’t take the plane from the ground straight to the air, you ascend level by level . It’s the same in the artist world. If you keep growing you will get where you need to be. I have had a lot of bought lessons! Some that cost me and my business partner dearly! Every one is not who they say they are in this business so it’s important to do your research and follow the path that works for you! Hire a Entertainment attorney if needed and make sure you pay attention to the fine print in contracts. Reading with understanding is definitely fundamental! I want the world to know that what you see is a product in the making over the years and not overnight. Success takes time so develop the attitude for patience! Everything is not microwaveable in the industry! Learn this business and study wisely! Go to conferences, seminars etc. This too helps you stay current!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to several spots in the Houston Area! Houston has Amazing surrounding areas, events, shopping and restaurants that are super cool such as: Pappasitos, I love their flat nachos. Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, the Galleria Mall with tons of shopping. Kemah Boardwalk is a beautiful place that sits on the Galveston Bay,with rides, food and a lot of sites to see. I would also take them to Galveston. It’s about an hour away right by the Gulf of Mexico and my favorite place to hang out there is a restaurant/bar called ” The Spot”. It’s like going to the Caribbean with the set up they have there. They make you feel right at home. I also love ” The Woodlands”. They have several spots to eat and shop at! Houston is super rich in culture and diversity! We have Amazing churches here too just in case you want to get your worship on! It’s a lot of hidden jewels here and it could take a year or more to get to everything! It’s super cool to be here especially in the summer! H-town has it going on!! Go Texans, Astros and Rockets!!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to Shoutout three important people that have helped me on my journey : First, is my Lord and Savior- Jesus Christ! Without the LORD’S help and continued guidance none of this is possible. His grace is sufficient everyday for me to do the work I am called to do and his word makes it possible for me to live what I sing about and be a better person each and every day! I am grateful to be on this journey and I strive to help others be the best they can be too. Second, my hubby and business partner Glenn GP Piper! he is a huge part of shaping and molding the brand we have today Bdm/ Ugroove Music. He also helps me make the main thing prevalent concerning staying true to who I am, what my/our brand is about and he’s a gem to work with. It doesn’t mean we don’t disagree on things but, we are able to come to a resolution to continue the mission and get the job done! Third, Zadella ” Mama” Curtis is definitely one of my mentors in this industry that has helped shape my growth. She passed away a year or two ago but, the information and training she gave me will be with me forever! I am forever grateful to have crossed paths with her and I thank GOD for our divine connection.
