We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelina Hawkins-Sajwani, MBA and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shelina, how do you think about risk?
My corporate career started in Private Equity. That’s a life of high risk and high reward and it’s how I’ve lived my life. However, most people like to play things safe. That is why I am in the business of insurance. By definition, insurance is the transfer of risk from an individual or company to an insurance company. Some people do not realize that until I say it. You are technically paying a monthly or yearly price for “the chance” something bad could happen, and if it does you will not be liable to pay for those damages. Insurance gives peace of mind. There’s something about stability that most people need. Opening an Independent Insurance Agency has not been easy, however I knew that I could make a difference in the industry and in other people’s lives. Too often we see people getting taken advantage of. There is a level of trust between two people and a lot of the time that trust is abused and turned into profits by insurance agents. Well that is why Hawk INS Group is here. We are here to help the small business owners, we are here to advise, and we are here to help them save. Ultimately, we are in the business of the transfer of risk. The number one misunderstanding when it came to opening Hawk INS Group was how can “you” accept all that risk. How can you insure the big companies? We are an independent insurance agency who is contracted to sell insurance on behalf of the best insurance companies out there. The biggest risk I have taken in my career was utilizing my MBA for opening Hawk INS Group, instead of obtaining an internship and working for a big financial firm. That is the route everyone took and really the route that I had planned on taking. It was a risk knowing that I wouldn’t have a secure salary. However, opening Hawk INS Group has its rewards. Everyday I know we are helping someone understand their policy, helping them gain a new big contract, and the smiles I cause are priceless!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Hawk INS Group, LLC is an Independent Insurance Agency located in Houston, TX. We are licensed to transact Property and Casualty Insurance in the state of Texas. We specialize in Business Insurance. We like retention, so we ensure our client’s policies are shopped around for annually. Being independent has many advantages. Such as, different insurance companies flourish in certain industries. We aren’t forced to sell a certain branded product. We can shop around for our industry-specific clients that have unique risks. We are as transparent as possible, because we like for our clients to understand their insurance policy and what they are actually covered for.

We have a bilingual staff from English, Spanish, Hindi, and Urdu. We walk our clients every step of the way of the insurance purchasing process. Some of our clients are new ventures and we assist with the LLC and EIN formation. If they are in the transportation industry we assist them with DOT #’s and speaking with TDLR.
The list of what sets Hawk INS Group apart from our competitors could go on and on. The the heaviest differentiating factor would be how we have our clients best interests at heart. We really do shop around to ensure our clients get the best price and the coverages needed to satisfy contracts and protect their businesses.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting the city I would definitely take her to dinner at MAD. Eating there is a whole vibe! The River Oaks Shopping center has everything from watching movies at IPic, to delicious Affogato at Amorino. We would probably have to stop by the Museum of Fine Arts to see what exhibitions are on display, and if we were looking for a night of fun I’d probably stop by a few Houston spots like Clè, Heart, Boheme, and Heights Bier Garten.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shout out to Yara Perez. She is who showed me the commonalities between Property and Casualty Insurance and the investment banking industry. When I was pursing my MBA I had my eyes set on becoming an Investment Banker, but she encouraged me to get my Property and Casualty license, and I’m glad she did!
