We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanai Winston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tanai, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success would be continuing to persevere. Life can often times throw us so many problems that set us back or make us want to give up on our goals and dreams, however, in order to succeed you have to be willing to be okay with anything that could happen, you have to be okay with knowing that problems are going to come. That way when situations do arise, you remain calm, take a deep breath and are able to dance in the rain until your sunshine comes back. No matter how many days go by that I don’t receive an order for Dub Scrubs or how many days go by, I feel like being an entrepreneur just isn’t working for me, I remind myself the reason I started this, the goals I am going to reach and the past I am leaving behind and I continue to persevere in my journey.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business Dub Scrubs, was actually my 2nd business I began. I started off selling fresh homemade plates of food (Hot Plates HTX) because I knew so many college students at The University of Houston who missed having a good home cooked meal. It was a huge hit and I would sell out every weekend I was selling them. However I hated cooking so often and so much so I put it on the back burner for a while. Dub Scrubs came about when I began to make little lip scrubs for myself because I did not want to pay almost $10 for a tiny scrub from stores. After creating them, so many people wanted to give it a try too or wanted to know how I did it, so I saw it as a great small business to start. With the platform I had already created through Hot Plates and all the lessons I learned in running a business, Dub Scrubs instantly took off as well! The key is to know who you are marketing too, for my business we marketed to those who have dark/discolored lips, those who wanted soft pink plump lips and those who needed a little more to their self care regime. Of course with every business startup comes the hardships and for me, it was trying to find funding and continue to fund Dub Scrubs. I wanted to stand out from store brands in creating a lip scrub that consisted of ONLY all natural ingredients and was at a much affordable price for all price ranges ($4/lip scrub). Although the demand was there, it felt like I was losing more money than I was making. I had to figure out how to compensate for this while also remembering sometimes when starting a business you will lose more than you gain so that one day you look up and have gained way more than you lose. With that mindset I launched phase 2 of Dub Scrubs and created body scrubs as well. People very quickly enjoyed and loved the body scrubs that I quickly was selling out of every batch I was making. It felt great knowing that all this hard-work, losing funds, having to work another job to keep funding my business, and all those who told me to just give it up, didnt go to waste and because I continued going and didn’t lose sight and faith in knowing what my business can be, the results started to show. Therefore to any future entrepreneurs and anyone looking to become one.. i’ll be the first to tell you, it’s never going to be easy, its never going to just happen and the success wont be immediate, but remember and know why you started your business, focus on your goals and just take it day by day and one day all that hard work, all those long nights and all that stress.. will be rewarded.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend and I love going out, so if she were to come to Houston, I would definitely have to take her to Post for good food, good vibes and a beautiful view at the top! Of course we would also have to take a stop at one of my favorite places The French Fry House, it is soo good and definitely recommend everyone to try! We would then head to Buffalo Bayou and see the huge pyramid they have at the park which I love to just sit and meditate on and its such a unique design. I think Houston has so many great and fun places to try and go to, honestly anywhere in the city is an adventure for sure, but make sure to eat at The Breakfast Klub too for some good southern breakfast food, you definitely won’t be disappointed!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would first like to give recognition to my savior Jesus because without Him working in the background on my favor none of this would have been possible. I also would like to recognize the woman who taught me the hustle, my #1 supporter, & one of the reasons I am successful today, my mother, for teaching me what it means to never give up and that hard work does pay off. Lastly a shoutout to all my siblings, friends and family, you all have played such a huge impact and role into who I am today and I couldn’t do it without you all constantly reminding me to keep being better. Thank you!
