We had the good fortune of connecting with Vanessa Lopez Coutino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vanessa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Create By V grew out of financial and artistic necessity. When the quarantine started I was entering college as freshman and had very limited opportunities to pay for my tuition. Additionally, I’ve always considered myself an artist in multiple ways, and spending such large amounts of time indoors made me desire a artistic outlet. I had recently taken a sewing class for the first time and I had began to expand my knowledge on sewing during my free time. Therefore, I came up with the idea to fund my education through sewing and to start up Create By V. At first my business was just for fun and a way to share my art with my community however I began to take my business seriously when I noticed the need for stylish and safe face masks during the pandemic. In the future I plan to expand my business to incorporate accesories that a larger audience can enjoy!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Create by V aims at selling handmade high-quality accesories and customs made personally by it’s owner. I think my business stands out from others because of the love and time I put into my shop. I truly enjoy sewing and I believe you can see it through my creative designs and I am always working towards having something new in my shop to allow me to expand my sewing skills. Since I sell items that are hand-crafted by myself, I feel a more personal connection with my business and I put all of my effort for everything to be perfect but to also have a creative touch in order to stand out and to show who I am.
I am most proud of the amount of people I have been able to reach with my business. A few months after I started my business, I would see lots of my friends wearing my masks and it didn’t kick in how many people I had reached until I would see strangers in public wearing my designs. This really left an impact on me because I was able to indirectly able to connect with hundreds of people through a hobby of mine. I will always be greatful for all of the students at my University, friends, family and others who have supported my business.
The biggest lesson I have learned through my business journey is to not be afraid of sharing your business and making a connection between yourself and your business. When I first began my shop, I tried to keep my identity as anonymous as possible and I would never tell anyone about my business. I was afraid that putting my identity out there and telling people about my business would be unprofessional and they would forced to look at my business. However, I decided to appear on my instagram and I began telling my friends about my business and I think this was one of the best steps I had taken. This made my business more personal and it allowed others to feel connected to my story. Now I am not afraid of expressing my love for my business and I should never have felt afraid to do otherwise.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting Houston, I would definitely take them to Honey Art Cafe here in Montrose. It is a small cafe near Shepard Dr and has the tastiest and most unique desserts I have ever had. They offer a variety of desserts and some are even inspired from Studio Ghibli movies. My favorite part about Honey Art Cafe is the variety of affordable crafts they offer. From watercolor painting kits to earrings, they have something for an level of experience. I think this cafe is great for anyone whether you simply want a good dessert or want to express your artistic creativity.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank everyone who has supported my business by purchasing, following my social media or sharing my business with others. Additionally, I would like to thank my parents and family for helping me through my business journey. They have provided me resources and have even packed orders themselves. Lastly, I would like to thank Lindsey Faleiro and Anthony Kimmons for initiating my interest in sewing and for developing my love for art.
