We had the good fortune of connecting with Venus Tran and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Venus, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I originally never intended to start a business. It genuinely started from being bored and wanting to pass time.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I definitely like to think that I’m inclusive with my art. I primarily make earrings and love being able to give people a statement piece. Being able to be apart of someone’s outfit and being able to help them show their style/aesthetic, is absolutely fulfilling as an artist. I try to incorporate as many themes in my art as possible, wether it’s vulgar, horror, cutesy, simplistic, or cottagecore.
I originally had zero intentions of creating jewelry when I initially started. I’m not sure what changed my mind, but as I expanded further I received more positive feedback from customers that made it feel worthwhile. Starting a business is never easy and making the leap to make it your livelihood is all the more terrifying. I have no regrets, but it’s not without difficulty.
I feel I’m constantly overcoming challenges and hurdles with my business. As trends and fads come and go, so does my need to constantly make new inventory to match the trends. An important lesson that I feel everyone who starts a business should realize is, you can’t just only make what you like. A business is meant to cater to customers and clientele, not just you.
I would like the world and people to see my brand and my story, as a young woman who is simply trying to bring a little bit of color and life to another.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My go to places are definitely the bars and restaurants in Houston! I don’t get the chance to travel much, but hands down Bosscat is a great place with an amazing ambience, with equally amazing drinks. For food I would recommend Gus’s world famous fried chicken. You totally have to order the fried okra.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My best friend Cedric. Having a friend to lean on and being able to tell them any and everything. I’m extremely grateful, fortunate, and prosperous.
